Brian Kaufmann – Lafayette College (Track & Field)

Major:  Engineering

Final list of colleges:  Lafayette, Lehigh, Tufts

Reasons for choosing Lafayette:  “I chose Lafayette because they have an excellent engineering program, and it’s a great school. After going on my official visit, I felt like everyone was really welcoming and I belonged there. I loved it.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in track and field at the collegiate level?  “I started playing soccer, and then I went from soccer to track. Eventually, I quit soccer, and I started training and working really hard in track. I realized I could compete at the collegiate level and I wanted to.”

Coach Floyd Dinkens says:  “It was very good working with someone who has worked as hard as he has. He’s a little undersized, and he never let that be a deterrent. He’s always had the combination of things needed. He has the strength and jumping ability and the speed. When you’re undersized, your technique has to be very good, so he did a lot of technique work. His heart was always in it, and he was always willing to work independently. He was a good leader, and he helped work with some of the younger athletes. He’s been a good student and a good athlete. This is my fourth year with him, and he’s progressed throughout that time. He’s also competed in the summer. He just loves to compete. We give an award to the best jumper, and he was one of the few people that probably will win it three years in a row.”
