Bergey's Inc. SOL SHSHL Player of the Week: Gabe Evans

Bergey’s Buick GMC

SOL SHSHL Player of the Week

This recognition is sponsored by Bergey’s Buick GMC. Athletes are chosen based on nomination of coaches, and the recipient must be a positive presence on the ice and a credit to the game. Consideration also is given to the student-athlete’s standing in the school and community.

A four-year varsity player, senior Gabe Evans has been part of Souderton’s program since fifth grade. As a freshman, he was a swing player for the Souderton squad that advanced to the 2014 Flyers Cup final. Evans is having an outstanding season and is the Indians’ top goal scorer with 19 and also has a team-high 30 points. He is active in youth hockey, working with young players at numerous hockey clinics. Evans also gives his time to Souderton’s Learn to Play program.
Note from the coach:
“He’s a good kid, a kind-hearted kid, and he wants to do well,” coach Matt Montagna said. “He wants to do well by his teammates, he wants to be a good player. He has persevered, and he shows up and plays hard.
“He’s all in for Souderton hockey. Hockey is a sport where you can get big time real easy, Gabe’s always all in. He loves playing, he loves competing, and he’s having a great year.
“Gabe is a goal scorer. He scores goals. That’s what he does, that’s what he’s always done. He has a great shot. He understands the offensive side of hockey, and this year, one of the things he’s done much better – he’s now playing center. I wasn’t always the biggest fan of him playing center, but watching him defensively – when he’s back, he understands how to do it, which is very rare in hockey. You don’t see that all the time. I have real centers, which is what makes us a pretty good squad, and he’s one of them.”
About Gabe
Best memory playing high school hockey:  Winning Silver Sticks and traveling to Michigan to play international teams.
Part of the game I enjoy most: I love scoring goals, especially in really close games when it gives our team the lead.
How did you get involved in hockey? My granddad Wayne got me in skates as early as possible. I’ve been playing hockey since I was about four years old.
My role model is:  My granddad because he’s done everything he could for me to play ice hockey and is a prime example of someone who perseveres through the worst of times. He has inspired me to play hockey and always persevere through the worst of times
Music on iPod:  I listen to everything except for country music. I mainly listen to alternative rock such as Twenty One Pilots.
Favorite food:  I love apples. I eat them before every game I play.
Favorite class:  Honors Chemistry is my favorite class so far. It’s a difficult class that I understood pretty well. I also had an amazing teacher, which made the class a lot of fun.
Future plans:  I currently have plans to defer moving on to college, so I could play junior hockey in the hopes of playing NCAA. I’ll be going to Montgomery County Community College while pursuing my hockey career. I’ll be going to MCCC undecided.
Four people I’d invite to a dinner party:
Wayne Evans (granddad)
Wayne Gretzky
Tyler Joseph (Twenty One Pilots)
Will Ferrell
