SOL District One Girls' Swimming Wrap (3-2-17)

North Penn girls are atop the standings after day one of the District AAA Championships at La Salle University.

The first day of the District One Class AAA girls swimming championships is in the books and North Penn is leading the team competition.

The Knights posted a first day score of 196 points on Thursday at Kirk Pool on the campus of LaSalle University.

Kailyn Evans gave North Penn a boost when she set a meet record in the 200 individual medley, posting a time of 2:00.17. The previous mark was 2:01.64 set in 2002 by Tricia Harm of Council Rock.

“I had it in my mind to break the record but I didn’t know what it was until I got here,” said Evans, a senior. “When I did it I was like ‘Yes! Yes!’ It was really cool.

“We knew that on paper we weren’t going to win this meet so we had to come in and attack it from the start. It feels good I’m really excited for the rest of the meet. I think the momentum will definitely carry us.”

Claudia Thamm was fifth (2:04.48) and Megan Zartman was seventh (2:05.68) to round give the Knights three medal winners in the 200 IM.

Thamm also took third in the 100 butterfly (55.85).

Also for North Penn, Katelyn Harkrader, Kailyn Evans, Megan Zartman and Rosalinda Rivera took second in the 200 medley relay (1:45.16) and Thamm, Parker Schulz, Caroline Dunigan and Rivera were also second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.70).

Morgan Scott of Pennridge won the 200 freestyle in a meet record time of 1:48.43, breaking her own district record of 1:59.95 set in2015.

She also anchored the fifth place 200 freestyle relay for teammates Erin Shema, Reese Trauger and Anna Beno (1:36.89).

“I was just hoping to swim well,” Scott said. “I’ve been training really hard. (Wednesday) I had one of the hardest practices ever so I was really exhausted coming in. I’m really thankful for the time that I got and breaking my own record.

“It was a great race. Having girls that I know swimming in the lanes around me was really fun and I have a lot of confidence now for the rest of the meet. I’m excited for the 100 free and the 400 free relay. Our 200 free relay got the automatic for states so I’m really happy about that.

“I love swimming here. Everyone’s really supportive and cheering. When you go to states, District One always has a lot of people there and everyone is cheering for everyone else and it’s like that here.”

Shema rounded out the day for the Rams with a seventh place finish in the 100 butterfly (57.12).

The Rams are ninth in team scoring (60).

For Upper Dublin, Abbie Amdor finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:50.06) and Elle Braun was third in the same event (1:52.09).

Souderton’s Hailey Freed, Emily Hodges, Jenny Rogers and K.K. Hershey finished sixth in the 200 medley relay (1:47.49).
