Major: Finance
Final list of colleges: ODU, Georgetown, St. Joseph’s
Reasons for choosing ODU: “When I went down, they were very accommodating. They seemed like they were very interested in me. So did the other schools, but when I got to Old Dominion, I just felt like it was the right fit. I just had that feeling.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in soccer at the collegiate level? “I would definitely say my dad – he played for a long time. I started when I was three and have played ever since. This is my 15th year. It’s crazy to think about. I used to play up with my dad, but when I was eight, my parents realized it wasn’t the best club, so I moved to YMS when I was eight, and I’ve been there ever since.”
Coach Tom Stoddart says: “I read a quote not that long ago from a professional coach, and he basically said a team can be measured and is as good as the goal scorer they put in front of them. That was it. Zach put the ball in the back of the net, and he was dangerous at all times. You build a team behind a player like that. You get a goalie, you build in front of them, and if you get a striker like that, you build behind him. He was a pleasure to build behind the last four years.
“Zach is a leader, he’s a geek in the true terminology of a positive thing for soccer – he loves the sport, he understands the sport, he lives for the sport. Even in season with us, if he wasn’t at our practices, he was out teaching the game to others and the youth at YMS. He was everything you could ask for. He was great on campus, he has a great reputation amongst his teachers, he’s always smiling, always in a good mood.”
