On Thursday, April 6, 2017, Souderton seniors Kyle Lennon, Miles Minnick, Brett Moyer, Thylar Summarell and Derek Freed were recognized for committing to continue baseball careers at the collegiate level. To view photos of the event, please visit the Photo Gallery.
“I’d like to congratulate all five of them,” coach Mike Childs said. “This is my biggest class of college players. It’s a great honor to have these kids move on and continue their baseball careers in college.”
Kyle Lennon – Misericordia University (Baseball)
Major: Accounting
Final list of colleges: Ursinus, Delaware Valley, Arcadia
Reasons for choosing Misericordia: “It is a great liberal arts school that allows for freedom to change my major at any time because I am not set on a major yet. Also, they have a very competitive baseball program I can’t wait to be part of.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “I started thinking about playing college baseball after my junior year spring season of baseball. Until then, I was indecisive on whether I wanted to play or not.
“The recruiting process for Misericordia started in August at a showcase tournament at Millersville University. Coach Mulvey saw me perform well at the showcase, and the rest fell into place. I made my commitment over the past winter, and I am very excited to be playing college baseball.”
Coach Mike Childs says: “Kyle Lennon is an absolutely great kid, an all-around athlete. I’m glad he found a spot that is going to use his athletic ability at multiple positions. He will be an asset to that program.”

Miles Minnick – Arcadia University (Baseball)
Major: Pre-Physician Assistant
Final list of colleges: Arcadia, Chestnut Hill, Eastern University
Reasons for selecting Arcadia: “They have my major. I liked the school, and it felt like home to me.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “I always thought about playing a collegiate sport throughout my high school career. My recruitment process started the summer of junior year. Over the course of the summer, a tremendous amount of doors started to open up for me.”
Coach Mike Childs says: “Miles Minnick is going to Arcadia, and he will be a right-handed pitcher for them. He’s got good size and will definitely help their pitching staff. He could probably work into one of their starters and will definitely be an asset to their program.”

Brett Moyer – Arcadia University (Baseball)
Major: Accounting
Final list of colleges: Arcadia, Moravian, King’s College
Reasons for choosing Arcadia: “I wanted to be fairly close to home. The coaching staff at Arcadia gave me the vibe of a bright future for the program. On my overnight, I connected very well with the players, and they instantly made me want to go there. The campus is also close to Philadelphia so there are good business/accounting connections.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “From a young age, I always wanted to play high school baseball. Once I became a freshman and that dream became a reality, I wanted to pursue my career further than just my four years at Souderton. Sophomore year is when the recruiting process started for a few schools, but the more intense ones started the summer after junior year.”
Coach Mike Childs says: “Brett Moyer played first base/designated hitter. Arcadia is definitely getting one of the better hitters in the area. He started off with two home runs in our first league game, so he can do a lot of things with the bat and do some damage at the college level also, along with playing first base.”

Thylar Summarell – Lackawanna College (Baseball)
Major: Sports Management
Final list of colleges: Lackawanna, East Stroudsburg, Ursinus, Misericorida
Reasons for choosing Lackawanna: “This school has a great background of student-athletes that transfer out of their school and move on to high Division 1 and Division 2 schools. This school also offers the major that I was first intending on learning in college, which was sports management. Another big role in why I chose this school was that the campus wasn’t too big or wasn’t too small. It fit me just right.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “Playing baseball at a young age and excelling in my sport, I always wanted to play at a higher level after high school because I have progressed greatly over time. I knew by my freshman/sophomore year that I wanted to play at the next level because colleges started looking at me at that time.”
Coach Mike Childs says: “Thylar Summarell is a left-handed pitcher who would be an asset to any program. Lackawanna is getting a good player overall. The kid’s got power, arm strength, can hit well. He can do it all, and he’s got great speed for a guy his size.”

Derek Freed – Messiah College (Baseball)
Coach Mike Childs says: “Derek Freed was one of our middle infielders. He chose Messiah, which is a great fit for him. I think he’ll be able to do well there and progress and do whatever they need of him. I think he’ll contribute early in his career – I could see him getting some time freshman/sophomore year as a middle infielder.”
