PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Sterling Limo Offensive Players of the Game:
First star: Zach Demarchis, Pennsbury – The junior quarterback was impressive in the air and on the ground in the Falcons’ 27-20 win over defending District One 5A champion Academy Park, finishing with 286 yards. DeMarchis threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 128 yards and one TD.
Coach Dan McShane says: “He’s the nucleus, and with him, it was just a matter of getting experience in the system. He did a great job in the offseason. We all knew he had talent. It was just a matter of getting used to the spread style offense and some of the decision making that’s involved – there’s a fair amount of decision making for him compared to the typical high school quarterback, and it takes some time. He’s one of the strongest kids in the weight room, he’s fast, and he’s tough. He’s a good kid, a talented kid, and he paid the price in the offseason.”
Second star: Zack Tarburton, Ryan Rapp, Randy Bahmueller, Brian Lafty, Steve Dadio, Pennridge – Sparked by the overpowering effort of the offensive line, the Rams’ offense piled up 406 total yards in their 41-7 rout of Norristown, which included 285 yards on the ground and 121 more in the air.
Coach Jeff Hollenbach says: “We had 406 total yards, and it was primarily due to these five and the work they did in the offseason to prepare.”
Third star: Michael Welde, Council Rock North – In a contest that saw the Indians amass 196 yards of total offense, the senior running back accounted for 125 of those yards on 20 carries and played a key role in Council Rock North’s 14-13 upset of West Chester East.
Sterling Limo Defensive Players of the Game:
First star: Mike Garlick, Neshaminy – The senior captain spearheaded an impressive defensive effort in Neshaminy’s 14-7 win over Roman Catholic, finishing the game with 10 tackles – 3.5 tackles for a loss - as well as a fumble recovery, sack and pass breakup.
Coach Steve Wilmot says: “Mike is a returning starter for us on defense, and he’s a captain of our team. We expect him to be a leader and perform well on the field, and he definitely didn’t let us down on Friday night. He was really just running all over the field. He runs well, he’s a tough kid and he was making a lot of tackles. I was really impressed with just the way he was running around – he was getting from point A to point B really quick, and when he got there, he was in a really good position to make the tackle. He’s the heartbeat of our team. Even before we even voted for captains, he was a captain the coaches named. He was a leader for us in the offseason, and he was a leader for us last year as a junior. This is kind of what we expected from him, and he delivered.”
Second star: Gabe Gipli, James Koliyah, Alex Fisher, Jackson Sutton, Dan Aquilone, Tyrone Willis, Martin Dormah, Habeeb Baba, Mike Nicholson, Shakell Hall, Javeer Peterson, Chris Andreacchio, Harry S Truman – The Tigers’ defensive unit allowed a total of 106 yards and only four first downs in a stellar performance in Truman’s 48-0 rout of Methacton.
Coach Michael LaPalombara says: “The defense played aggressive and fast under the guidance of defensive coordinator Galen Snyder, shutting out Methacton to help the Tigers win their first game of the season. It was a team effort to win the game and a total defensive effort to keep Methacton off the scoreboard.”
Third star: Coleman Closser, Council Rock North – With the Indians clinging to a 14-13 lead late against West Chester East, the junior defensive lineman delivered a game-saving play, coming up with a sack and forcing a fumble that was recovered by the Indians to preserve the win. Closser finished the game with six tackles – two for a loss, two sacks and one forced fumble.
Sterling Limo Special Teams Players of the Game:
First star: Caleb Mead, Upper Moreland – The junior running back had a marvelous debut in Upper Moreland’s 41-14 win over William Tennent. After the Panthers took a 7-6 lead, Mead returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown that gave the Golden Bears a lead they would not lose. He also ran for 259 yards and a touchdown.
Coach Adam Beach says: “We’re fortunate this year in that we have two high quality backs – Sterlen Barr and Caleb. Sterlen has been getting a lot of press because he’s a senior, but we’re extremely impressed and excited for Caleb as well. When Barr went down, Caleb stepped in a showed what he could do, and it was very impressive. They kicked the ball away from Barr, and I think they’re regretting that a little bit because Mead just took it away. He’s a kid who really worked hard in the offseason - he’s doing a lot of extras on his own. He’s going to some training and working on his hands because he wants to be more of a receiving threat as well. He’s a kid who’s really put the work in to make himself better. He got the opportunity probably a little sooner than he thought, and he took advantage of it and didn’t look back.”
SOL Honor Roll:
Brad Bryan, Quakertown – The junior quarterback completed 10 passes for 130 yards, and his 30-yard touchdown pass to Tim Shevlin was the game winner in Quakertown’s 15-12 win over Central Bucks East.
Council Rock South Defense – In CR South’s 28-0 win over Cheltenham, the Golden Hawks’ defense allowed just a total of 107 yards.
Louis DeFrancesco, Neshaminy – The Redskins’ senior defensive lineman had eight tackles, two for a loss, in Neshaminy’s 14-7 win over Roman Catholic.
Marcus Griffin, Neshaminy – The junior defensive back came up with an interception and returned it 22 yards for the game-winning touchdown in Neshaminy’s 14-7 win over Roman Catholic.
Christian Jabbar, Council Rock South – Jabbar threw 161 yards and two touchdowns in Council Rock South’s 28-0 win over Cheltenham.
Nate Norris, Central Bucks South – The junior linebacker led a stingy Titans’ defense with 11 tackles in CB South’s 38-6 win over Abington. The Ghosts had just 171 yards of total offense and six first downs.
Keith Parrish, Bensalem – The senior running back had only six carries but rushed for 129 yards in Bensalem’s 20-14 win over Frankford, averaging 21.5 yards a carry.
Josh Pinkney, Pennridge – The senior running back ran for 134 yards on nine carries in Pennridge’s 41-7 win over Norristown, averaging 14.8 yards a carry.
