LEWISBURG The North Penn girls captured the team title at Thursday’s conclusion of the PIAA Class 3A girls swimming championships at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.

The Knights amassed 258 points to claim the trophy.

It was a rare tie for the gold medal in diving between North Penn teammates Paige Burrell and Meghan Wenzel, who posted identical scores of 465.50 points.

“I didn’t think this was a possibility,” said Wenzel, a sophomore. “Overall everyone’s been diving well and the scores were all really tight so I thought it was anyone’s game.”

Burrell had the first place position after both the preliminaries and semifinals while Wenzel was second after the prelims and third after the semifinals.

“We definitely pushed each other all year to be the best that we could be and it’s really great that we both ended up with gold medals,” Burrell said. “We never expected that. We’ve been back-and-fourth all year.”

Teammate Madalyn Freece finished fourth (434.50), moving up from 11th place after the prelims.

Claudia Thamm, Kaelan Daly, Megan Zartman and Parker Schulz won the 400 freestyle relay (3:23.85).

Megan Zartman earned the silver medal in the 100 backstroke (54.98) for the Knights.

Three North Penn swimmers finished in a row in the consolation final of the 100 freestyle. Caroline Dunigan took 11th (51.47), Parker Schulz was 12th (51.48) and Kaelan Daly was 13th (51.92) in that event and Katelyn Harkrader was 17th in the 100 backstroke (58.35).

Morgan Scott of Pennridge capped off a stellar career with a victory in the 100 freestyle (49.22), marking the second year in a row she won this event.

She competed in the final against her niece, sophomore Emma Steckiel of Governer Mifflin, who finished fifth.

“I thought I was going to cry but I didn’t,” Scott said. “I was on the blocks thinking that this was it and the next thing I knew it was over.

“I thought it would be a more significant race for me but going 49 felt really good. I’m very happy right now.”

She was named the Outstanding Swimmer of the meet.

Council Rock South senior Phoebe Shaya took the bronze medal in diving (447.55).

Upper Dublin’s 400 freestyle relay of Abbie Amdor, Elle Braun, Aly Breslin and Molly Braun took second (3:24.41).
