The Cardinals had 11 of their first 12 hitters reach base. In the first inning, the Cardinals CF Jack Jamison reached on a hit by pitch, but he got picked off. Riley Brink singled and that was followed by a Joey Monaghan double. Gerald M Breslin then flew out to center and Brink was called out at third for leaving too early for the third out.
The bottom of the second started similarly when Elijah Peck walked and was caught stealing by Hatters sophomore catcher Benny Wilson. After Alex Goldenberg reached on a hit by pitch, Wilson gunned down another base runner when he threw out the courtesy runner trying to steal second. It looked like Hatters starting pitcher would get out of the inning when there was nobody on and two outs with two strikes on the Cardinals Brian McPeak, but McPeak fouled off a couple pitches and then hit a double down the left field line. That was followed by a bad hop single, hit by pitch, another hit by pitch, a walk, and an error. After all of that, the Cardinals were up 4-0.
Cardinals starting pitcher, Gerald C Breslin, took a no-hitter into the top of the 6 inning. The Hatters sophomore 3B Eric Thron broke up the no-hitter with a single up the middle. After a fielder’s choice, senior CF Jake Mayson doubled to give the Hatters life with 2nd and 3rd and one out. Sophomore 1B followed with another double, but Mayson was thrown out at third base when his feet slipped out from under him while running hard around third and trying to put the breaks on. Sophomore SS Jake Bianchini followed with an infield single to set up second and third. With two outs, pinch runner Kevin Lastowka was thrown out trying to score on a double steal to keep the game at 4-1.
The Hatters would threaten again in the top of the 7th when, with one out, seniors Kevin Waeltz and Shane Carpenter singled to give the Hatters first and second. However, Ryan Beschio replaced Breslin and ended the game when Wilson hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game on the first pitch.
Crim went 6 innings, allowing 4 runs, 2 of which were earned, while allowing 6 hits, 2 walks, 5 hit batters and striking out 3.
The Hatters (2-6 Overall, 2-3 SOL American) will look to bounce back on Thursday at home against Cheltenham.
