Council Rock North’s Matt Whalen and Chris DeMedio captured the District One 3A Doubles Tournament title, and North Penn’s Frank Yanni and Ansh Sharma finished third.
A pair of SOL doubles team left their mark at the District One 3A Doubles Tournament. The fourth-seeded team of Council Rock North’s Matt Whalen and Chris DeMedio captured the district crown and the unseeded team of Frank Yanni and Ansh Sharma from North Penn finished third.
In an opening round match, Whalen and DeMedio rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 rout of Phoenixville. In the second round, the Rock North duo defeated Downingtown West’s Brett Graybill and Josh Biskowitz, and in the quarterfinals, they upended fifth-seeded Omesan Adebamgve and Jared Robinson from Lower Merion. The Rock North team defeated Yanni and Sharma 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 and then defeated third-seeded Ethan Bradley and Victor Li from Unionville in the title match.
Yanni and Sharma’s journey began with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 opening round win over Pennsbury’s Christian Succi and Justin Hubsch. In the second round, Yanni and Sharma upended eighth-seeded Isaac Rockower and Alec Yarnoff 6-2, 6-4 and then pulled off the upset of the tournament with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win over top-seeded Nikhil Gangoli and Sam Kesti from Great Valley. The North Penn team fell to eventual champions Whalen and DeMedio in the semifinals but came back to win the third place match by default.
Both doubles team advanced to the PIAA Class 3A Doubles Championships where Whalen and DeMedio finished fourth.
