On Wednesday, April 18, 2018, Upper Moreland seniors Cheyenne Grumm, MaddiGrace Wood and Jess Flanagan were recognized for committing to continue their lacrosse careers at the collegiate level. Check back for photos of the event.

Jess Flanagan – West Chester University (Lacrosse)
Major: Education
Final list of colleges: West Chester, Limestone, Kutztown
Reasons for choosing West Chester: “They have a good education program, and I liked the field when I went – I just felt like I could see myself going there, and they have an amazing lacrosse program as well. I liked the coaches too, which helped.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in lacrosse at the collegiate level? “I feel like I always knew because it’s something I loved doing. I excelled at it, and I knew I would want to play in college. Probably my junior year I knew that I really wanted to.”
Coach Kim Frantz says: “Jess scored her 100th career goal this year. She ended the season with a sprained ankle, so she didn’t play in the playoffs, and that was really tough. She was a good leader by example on the field. She was one of our key players, but we lost her for the last three conference games and the two playoff games. She’s very good at getting draws and got the majority of our draws. Her key was on the draw controls, and she could score for us.”

Cheyenne Grumm – Penn State Abington (Lacrosse)
Major: Criminal Justice
Final list of colleges: Penn State Abington, Arcadia, Chestnut Hill
Reasons for choosing Penn State Abington: “The money was one of the aspects, and being able to commit but not fully commit to lacrosse and be able to do other stuff too was part of it.
What was the progression that led you to competing in lacrosse at the collegiate level? “I started thinking about playing in college my sophomore year. I just wanted to continue my career. I started looking at colleges junior year, and I also played tournament ball too, so that helped.”
Coach Kim Frantz says: “Cheyenne was our goalie, and we’ll have a gigantic hole there next year. Everybody loved Cheyenne. She was the kind of player – everyone would always cheer for Cheyenne, everybody liked her a lot. She was a very kind person. She talked all the time – you could always hear her talking on the field, which helped our defense. She was a great leader in that way, and she was a huge part of our defense. In the big games, she really came through strong for us. She was a great goalie, and we were lucky to have her. She was part of the reason we were able to make it to the second round of playoffs after losing Jess. Having her back there was a huge part of our success.”

MaddiGrace Wood – Messiah College (Lacrosse)
Major: Exercise Science or something with Business or Dietetics
Final list of colleges: Messiah, Liberty, Gordon, Nyack
Reasons for choosing Messiah: “I was looking to play lacrosse at any of those schools. Messiah was the one I really wanted to go to all along, but I spent a really long process working out what other opportunities the schools could offer me as far as classes and studying abroad which is something I really want to do. Messiah just had it all, and as I came down the homestretch, I started working out money, and I’m super excited to be committing there because it’s definitely my favorite of the schools I applied to.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in lacrosse at the collegiate level? “I started playing lacrosse when I was in third grade, and for a long time, it never really crossed my mind to play in college, but as I got older and started seeing college athletes, it looked like a life that I really wanted. I just fell in love with Messiah’s lacrosse program. I love so many of the things they do, so just being part of a team at a school that I love was really attractive to me, and, of course, I’m really passionate about the sport itself, so I’m really excited.”
Coach Kim Frantz says: “MaddiGrace is going to be very missed. She’s one of my core defenders, and she’s my defender that talks the most and keeps everyone vocally in the game. She’s just a phenomenal leader and just a great kid all around. She’s a great leader by example and vocally. Her leadership on and off the field will definitely be missed next year.”
