COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH OFF TO HOT START
2019 PIAA AAA Team Championships
HERSHEY, PA-The Council Rock South Golden Hawks jumped out to an early lead on Hazleton Area in the Round of 16, in Hershey, PA, at the Giant Center with five straight victories. The usual suspects for the Golden Hawks got things going out of the gate as the match started at 113-pounds. Cavan Kinne moved up and in and posted a major decision to put South up 4-0 early in these championships. Then it was Max Mendez with a cradle to post a pin-fall and a 10-0 lead for CRS at 120-pounds. Shane Hanson-Ashworth then wrestled up at 126lbs to secure another major decision, 14-5, and additional bonus points for the Golden Hawks.
Branden Ricchini (CRS) scored a tech fall at 132-points, completely dominating Hazleton’s Christian Kislan as South began to roll. South’s L.J. Kahn disposed of Stephen Martisofski by fall at 138lbs, extending the Golden Hawks lead to 25-0 and the rout was on. Hazleton Area’s Charles Everdale slowed the Hawks with a narrow 7-6 victory over Eric Woloshyn at 145lbs. Woloshyn got the first takedown but could not thwart a comeback decision earned by Everdale.
Cole Flanagan wrestled Hazleton’s standout freshman, Bryce Molinaro, at 152. He scored an early takedown, got it together and wrestled well from every position to post a 6-3 decision. Flanagan had to fight off several leg attacks in the third period to secure the win. Golden Hawk freshman Matt Colajezzi shut out Dante Martella (HA) 9-0 with some good wrestling on his feet, and especially on the mat scoring 3-backs to end the match increasing the Hawks lead to 32-3 and gaining momentum.
At 170-pounds, senior leader for the Golden Hawks, Nik Korbich, hung on for a 3-2 decision adding to South’s point total, making the score 35-3 with five bouts remaining in the dual. Giani Gilch stepped on to the mat for South to take on Hazleton’s Jayson Brielmeier at 182lbs to mathematically eliminate Hazleton from any chance of a comeback. Gilch could not close out the dual over the Cougars, dropping a 2-0 decision. But Peter Eklund did the job, fighting hard and looking for his own offensive, in a 10-5 loss, securing the team win. There was no match at 220-pounds with CR South’s ticket punched for the quarterfinals starting at 2:00pm Friday.
Kyle Waterman closed the match with an impressive 13-0 win, and CRS can get a good night’s sleep and be ready for their afternoon tumble with Dallastown. Speaking to Golden Hawk freshman 160-pounder, Matt Colajezzi after the match, in which he displayed maturity beyond his years, explained that “it’s awesome…it’s an opportunity to make an impact on the team, it’s an opportunity to take my team to the finals, there’s nothing better than that” on his first win on the Giant Center mats.
