SOL National Conference
BENSALEM 3, PENNSBURY 2 (10-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-23, 15-13)
Things didn’t look all that promising for the Owls when the Falcons opened up a 2-1 lead, but the Owls dug deep, rallying to win the final two sets to notch their first win over the Falcons in memory.
“This is a huge win for the program,” coach Tim Linehan said. “Pennsbury is always the class of the SOL, and we have nothing but respect for coach (Justin) Fee and their top-notch program.”
The win over the Falcons is the first for Linehan, who is in his seventh year at the helm.
“Our guys have been playing great ball as of late,” said the Owls’ coach, whose team is 5-1 in its last six games and coming off a title in the Haverford Tournament. “The biggest change is our defense has greatly improved from the start of the season. I am extremely proud of the fight in this group.”
The Falcons were led by Paul Leible’s 11 kills and two blocks. Basheer Ghafary (three kills, two blocks, 29 assists) effectively directed the offense, distributing to Shiv Paten (seven kills, two aces) and Jake Mottershead (six kills). Middle blocker Kyle McVicar came up with two big blocks late. Harsh Shah (three aces) and Brad Rosenburg (two aces) led a strong service game for the Owls.
The Falcons got big performances at the net from Justin Sadley (16 kills, .324, one ace, two digs, three blocks), Luke Bucksar (13 kills, .440, four digs, one block) and Jake Loerch (17 kills, .294, two aces, eight digs, three blocks). Sebastian Kloda contributed eight kills (.467) while Nathan Sadley had five (.273). Setter Andy Delworth had 56 assists, one kill, one ace, three digs, one block. Matt Caissie had nine digs and two aces.
Bensalem upped its record to 6-5 in league play and 8-7 overall while the Falcons are 8-1 in the conference, 8-2 overall.
NESHAMINY 3, ABINGTON 2 (25-22, 25-20, 12-25, 12-25, 15-11)
The Redskins won a grueling five-set match, fighting off a gutsy Ghost squad that rallied from a two set deficit to even the match. The Redskins won the fifth and deciding set.
Tony Camille had a big night for the Redskins, finishing with 15 kills and 11 digs. Matt Schwab (six kills, two aces, nine digs, two blocks), Jesse Marshall (six kills, one ace, five digs, three blocks) and Paul Allen (six kills, eight digs) also contributed at the net. Setter Nick Storz had 32 assists, two kills, two aces, nine digs and one block. Jesse Kovashetz led the defense with 17 digs and two assists. Ben Clendening had three kills, and Stephen Fario had two aces, one assist and two digs.
The Ghosts’ offense was led by Danny Gonzalez with 19 kills as well as Juan Perez and Kenny Wasekanes with seven kills each. Setter Taulant Kurti had 28 assists. The Ghosts had 14 blocks on the night - seven from Juan Perez and five coming from Mario Colavita. The defense was led by Sean Dougherty, who earned his 500th career dig during the game. Danny Gonzalez had 16 digs, Kenny Wasekanes had eight and Ross Armon and Taulant Kurti each had seven digs.
Neshaminy is 7-3 in conference play, 9-4 overall. Abington (5-7, 4-6 SOL) is on the road Friday at Northeast High School.
COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 3, WILLIAM TENNENT 1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-17 25-20
The Indians and Panthers were deadlocked at one game apiece, but the Indians closed out the match strong, winning the next two sets.
Justin Burns had 18 kills and just one error for a .447 hitting percentage. He also had a team high 19 digs to go along with two aces. Nick Desautelle had 14 kills and 14 digs as well as three blocks. Sean D’Arcy contributed three kills, one ace and nine digs while Seth Connors had eight digs, four kills and a team high six blocks. Setter Vytis Duncia had 11 digs, 37 assists, two kills and one ace. Abe Eldo had 11 kills and one ace, Sean Mealey had four kills and one dig while Ben Green had five digs and one ace.
Council Rock North improved to 6-1 in conference play (8-2 overall) while William Tennent is 4-5 in the conference and 6-6 overall.
COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 3, CHELTENHAM 0 (25-7, 25-18, 25-9)
The Golden Hawks rolled to a sweep of the visiting Panthers.
Mitchell Gribman (13 assists, three aces, six digs) and Andrew Richards (seven assists, three aces, three blocks/two block assists, 11 kills, eight digs) led the Golden Hawks’ attack. Bram Topham (five kills, two aces, six digs) and Shevy Fernando (five kills, three aces, 10 digs) also made important contributions. Jadon ‘JD’ Freed (two aces, 2.25 passer rating, six digs) as well as Josh ‘JR’ Rowlands (eight digs, 2.0 passer rating, one kill), Alec Rovner (seven digs, two kills) and Jatin Singh (three blocks) led the Golden Hawks defensively.
Council Rock South is 2-9 overall, 2-8 in conference play.
SOL American Conference
UPPER DUBLIN 3, PENNRIDGE 1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-18)
The Flying Cardinals dropped the opening set but went on to win the next three to earn the win over the Rams, solidifying their spot in second in the conference standings.
Matthew Ross (13 kills, four aces, two assists, nine digs) and Mario Petushi (12 kills, two blocks, one assist, seven digs) had big days at the net to lead the Cardinals. David Levin (13 assists, one dig) and Devin O’Brien (19 assists, 14 digs, one ace) split setting duties. Mike Ryan added six kills, four blocks and one dig. Taco Thompson led the defense with 10 digs to go along with two aces while Joey Levin had eight digs. Also making contributions were Alec Madden (three kills, three digs), Andrew Enck (five digs), Trevor Molloy (one kill, two digs) and Ciaran Sutherland (one ace, one dig).
For the Rams, Ryan Benscoter (eight kills, eight digs, two aces) and Austin Jalosinski (six kills, four blocks, two aces) led a balanced attack. Ethan Lionetti and Chris McKinney each had five kills. Lionetti also had 12 digs while McKinney had 18 assists. Danny Rutter’s 16 digs led the defense. Matt McCreary and Brandon Shire contributed four and three blocks respectively.
Upper Dublin upped its record to 8-2 in conference play, 10-2 overall. Pennridge is 5-5 in the conference, 5-7 overall.
NORTH PENN 3, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-23)
The Knights received contributions up and down their lineup in Thursday’s sweep of the Titans.
Setter Drew Coles had 13 assists, five digs, one ace and one kill. Michael Wang led a balanced attack with eight kills, one ace, three blocks and eight digs. Others contributing were Manav Patel (two kills, two blocks, six digs), Luke Yoder (three kills, three digs), Zach Jayes (three kills, two blocks, two digs), Kevin Abraham (one kill, one block, one dig), AJ Patterson (one kill, one block, two digs), Isaac Lambert (two assists, four digs), Yasseen Rouni (two digs), Noel Abraham (three digs), Min Shin (one dig) and John Maggi (one ace).
For the Titans, setter Andrew Rubas had 10 assists, six kills, three blocks and six digs. Aidan O’Brien had an ace, six kills, two blocks, one assist and four digs. Rick Cho led the Titans at the service line with two aces, one kill and three digs. Mason Zeo led the defense with nine digs and also had five kills and an assist.
North Penn is 6-4 in conference play, 7-4 overall, and Central Bucks South (2-8 SOL) is 4-9 overall.
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 3, QUAKERTOWN 0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-12)
The Patriots used a team effort to earn a sweep of the visiting Panthers.
Directing East to its win were setters Jacob LaBouliere and Steve Storm. LaBouliere recorded 20 assists, four kills, and five digs, while Storm tallied 13 assists and an ace. Dylan Colbert tallied 12 kills, 10 digs, and an ace, and CJ Dalby managed seven kills two digs, and three aces. Jack Miller, according to coach Rob Minschwiner, played his usual consistently good match, picking up three digs, three blocks, and an ace, while Vishum Desai chipped in a kill. According to the Patriots’ coach, middles Thomas Gallagher-Teske (seven blocks, seven kills) and Christian Wolf (eight blocks, six kills, three digs) each played a terrific match. Ryan Figus (eight digs, two aces) and Jack Zapf (4 digs) provided the defensive glue on the night.
For the Panthers, Justin Flor (eight kills, one ace, one block, four digs, two assists) and Zach Frei (seven kills, one ace, one block, three digs, four assists) led the attack. Setter Ty Fosbenner had 13 assists, one kill, one ace and eight digs. Cameron Cronk added four kills, one block and two digs. Nathan Barkholz had one kill and five digs. Contributing one block each were Tyler Einolf and Ryan DiCandilo. Ryan Leatherman had four digs while Nathan Gingrich and Seth Wesley had one dig each.
Central Bucks East is 10-0 in conference play and 14-0 overall. Quakertown is 1-10 overall (0-10 SOL).
