Wissahickon Comments
The Wissahickon girls lacrosse team lost a barn burner 11-10 to #3 seed Abington on Wednesday night. Abington went out to a 6-3 halftime lead and then got the score up to 10-4 before the Lady Trojans stormed back. With 3:23 to play Wissahickon went on a tear scoring 6 consecutive goals to tie the game at 10 with 54 seconds left. Abby Degroat and Emma Baker were on fire on the circle. Abby had 8 draw controls and Emma had 6 draw controls. Sam Intrieri led the offense with 5 goals. However, with 21 seconds left Abington was able to score to go up 11-10. The Trojans playing hard until the end won the last draw and stormed down the field. They had an eight meter shot that went wide and another eight meter shot that was stopped with less than 1 second remaining in the game. The young Trojans are now 12-5 on the season and Abington clinched the outright Suburban One Title. For Wissahickon Sam Intrieri hit a milestone scoring her 200th goal of her career and finished the night at 203 career goals. When asked how it felt to reach 200, Sam said " it was very exciting to reach 200 goals and share the excitement with my teammates" It would have been nice to get the win but our team just never quits! This is the most wins we've had in our high school careers and we still have more to go. My dad,Wissahickon head coach Rob Intrieri won't ever let us give up. He was encouraging us throughout the game and told us to keep playing hard until the end. Our team is having a lot of fun this year and we don't want it to end. No matter what happens we all believe in each other and everyone plays their role well. We have one more home game and are excited for the playoffs.
Abington Comments
Final score: Abington 11, Wiss 10
Halftime: Abington 6, Wiss 3
Kaley Ehnow 2g, 1a
Abby Thomas 4g
Jamira Mashore 2a
Kelly McCallister 1a
Grace Hinkle 1g
Maddie Hinkle 3g, 1a
Shea Gormley 1g
Abby Johnson 1a
Ellie Hughes- 14 saves
Wiss outbeat us on the draw and was able to come up with it in the last couple of minutes when they were making a comeback. Ellie Hughes came up with huge saves and kept us in this game and secured the win. I am not sure if knowing we already won our league impacted how we played. We learn from the game and get ready for Radnor first, and then playoffs. I try to preach staying in the moment and staying present, especially since heading into the playoffs, we need to take care of one game at a time.
