It was the worst of time, it was the best of times and ultimately, it was overtime. In a tale of two halves, the Pennsbury Falcons' season ended in overtime as they came up on the short end of a 8-7 score to the Hatters of Hatboro-Horsham. The Hatters dominated the first half of play taking a 5-2 lead into halftime, but the fighting Falcons came out and outscored their opponent in the second half by the identical 5-2 margin to take the decision to overtime.

Playing the first half without two suspended (team rules) starting defensive mid-fielders, Hatboro-Horsham used their speed to pick up two first quarter goals by Jake Durkin, assisted by Robert Nagel and then Ryan Kreston. Meanwhile, the active Hatter defense was keeping the Falcons away from the net and forcing turnovers when they tried to penetrate the defense. The Falcons closed to within 1 goal at the start of the second period on an unassisted goal by Ricky Jutkiewicz, but the Hatter reclaimed the goal a minute later on an unassisted score by Ryan Kreston. Pennsbury returned the favor when Calvin Hopkins fed Kenneth Warren for a rip into the top corner to close within one goal again. But Ryan Kreston strung together two goals (of his game high three goals) in a row, the first on the rebound of an Eddie Coombs shot and the second when he stole a pass from a defenseman back to the goalie for the put-back goal with only seconds remaining in the half, and putting the Hatters in charge by a 5-2 score.

The second half was an entirely different story, as the Falcons came storming out to score three goals in the first two minutes. First, Ricky Jutkiewicz scored off a Kenneth Warren assist, and then scored again thirty seconds later, this time unassisted. Tim Considine completed the troika by burying a feed from Shawn Caven and knotting the score at 5-5. The blitz ended when Hatter middie Eddie Coombs scored unassisted, followed by a Jake Durkin goal (assisted by Ryan Kreston) to put the lead back to two goals. Falcon middie Pat “Moose” Bonnot cut the lead to a single goal taking a feed from Josh Caven and burying the running shot.

Bouyed by the return of the starting d-middies, the resilient Falcons bounced back, holding the Hatboro offense in check for the entire fourth quarter, while getting the equalizer midway through the fourth on an unassisted goal by Calvin Hopkins. Both teams had chances to get the game-winner in regulation, with H-H goalie Dino Vitale stopping a Shawn Caven shot from in close with 8 seconds to go.

Overtime was short but not so sweet for the Falcons as Hatter face-off man Joey Palo won the OT face and Hatboro coach Dave Sowers called a quick time-out. After setting up the play, the Hatters worked the ball around until Mike Meehl dodged from behind the cage, rolled back to his right and slipped a shot past Pennsbury goalie Drew Sweetland for the game-winner.

Congratulations to the Hatboro-Horsham Hatters as they represent the Suburban One league and advance to play number one seed Springfield this Saturday.

The win puts the Pennsbury Falcons at 17- 3 for the year and 1-1 in playoffs, while the Hatboro-Horsham Hatters are 17-3 on the year and 2-0 in the playoffs.
