Nevin Baer – American University (Soccer)
Major: Undecided
Final list of colleges: American, Penn, Temple, Lehigh
Reasons for choosing American: “I chose American because I wanted to go somewhere not too close so I could try something new and have some new experiences.
“They just got three knew coaches, and I knew them from previous recruiting – one from Villanova, one from Georgetown, and I really like them and their ideas and I’m excited to play for them.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in soccer at the collegiate level? “When I was younger, I really liked playing all sports. I played football, baseball and a bunch of different sports. When I got into middle school and high school, I decided I really liked soccer and I was sort of good at it, so I thought I could try and make it into college.”
Coach Randy Garber says: “He’s a blue chip player, he’s a stud. You don’t replace a Nevin Baer. I got to watch him for four years in training and in games, and it was a treat for the coaching staff and all the players that played with him. He just makes things look so easy. He scored some great goals in his career. The number of assists that he had – Sean Touey could thank him over and over for the many assists he created for Sean to score goals, and he’s a great kid off the field as well.
“There’s no question he loves the game, he has a passion for the game. He spent a lot of time as a young player developing the skills that he has. Obviously, you have to have some athletic ability to create those types of skills. He’s very quick, and you’re born with that. It’s a gift that he has. He reads the game, he sees the game a lot different from a lot of players at this level. He made a lot of players here better players because he was on the field. He could have gotten an opportunity to play in the academy at a young age but decided to take this route. I think he made a good decision. He got to play high school soccer for his school and share a lot of great moments, win championships and is still going to a very good D-I school, so it works. Our friendship will go on for a long time after he graduates. I definitely will have a chance to see him play in college. He’s just a good, good player that I think is going to have a better career the next four years in college, and who knows where that might take him after that.”

Reasons for choosing East Stroudsburg: “I chose East Stroudsburg because I had an overnight there, and I fell in love with the team and the programs they had to offer me as well as the campus.”
What was the progression that led you to playing soccer at the collegiate level? “I always loved competing ever since I was little, and I always wanted to play at the next level, so ever since I was 12 or 13, I always knew I wanted to play in college.
“Last year I really started to get into recruiting and really got serious about it and contacted coaches and went to camp. That’s when it really began.”
Coach Randy Garber says: “Andrew is going to East Stroudsburg, and I think the next four years will probably be better years for him soccer-wise than his high school career was. He’s a hard worker, he’s a very physical type player, he wins a lot of balls in the air – he’s very good in the air, but when he plays with better players around him, he’s going to be a better player himself. At East Stroudsburg, he’s going to be surrounded by better players, and that will be a challenge for him to fit into their style and their team. I think the next four years he will get an opportunity to play a lot more and become a better player for them than possibly the high school career he had.
“He did a nice job for us. He played a defensive midfield, and he played as a defensive player throughout the year. Andrew can play pretty much anywhere on the field. He’s that type of kid. It’s just a matter of where you need him. He’s one of those players that are utility players – they can play multiple positions depending what you need that particular day.”
