Suburban One League Tipoff Tournament
Central Bucks East 44, Gwynedd Mercy Academy 36
The Patriots had a size advantage over the Monarchs, and they made the most of it. Junior forward Emily Chmiel had a huge game under the basket, finishing with a game-high 24 points and double-digit rebounds.
“They’re small and we knew that,” East coach Liz Potash said. “We have some big kids, and we knew it wasn’t a game where we could trade threes on their end for twos on our end, but we scored a lot in the paint. It was a tough matchup for them.
“We were going to have tough matchups on our end because I was concerned about our forwards having to guard guards, but they did a really nice job.”
The Patriots – despite eight points from Chmiel – trailed 11-10 after one quarter, but they limited the Monarchs to just one basket in the second quarter as they went on an 11-3 tear to go into halftime with a 21-14 advantage.
They added to that lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Monarchs 16-8 to go on top 37-22. Chmiel had 10 points in the quarter, including a perfect 6-for-6 effort at the foul line. Mia Salvati added four points.
“We had a 20-point lead with under four minutes to go, and they cut it to six,” Potash said.
Despite the Monarchs’ late run, the Patriots’ coach was pleased with her team’s performance.
“We played well defensively,” Potash said. “I thought we shared the ball really well, pushed the ball well, took care of the ball until the last couple of minutes of the fourth quarter when it got a little bit dicey.”
In addition to Chmiel, Salvati added nine points and Gabby Wilga had eight.
“Mia Salvati did a good job at point,” Potash said. “It’s the first time she’s really just taken over the point for us. She’s been in the program for three years. Freshman year she had a limited role – Bailey McManus was our point guard, and last year it was Caroline Pla, so this is the first time that Mia has had to really step in. I thought she did a nice job.
“Gabby Wilga rebounded well for us. It was a good showing. Gwynedd’s always got a nice team. They’re ready to play, and I’m sure they’re going to have a good year. We haven’t started the year with a win in – I can’t tell you how many seasons, so that in itself was nice.”
Chmiel’s 24-point performance included a 10-for-14 effort at the charity stripe.
“Credit to Emily – she struggled from the foul line in the first quarter,” Potash said. “She went 2-for-6 and then she went 8-for-8 the rest of the game.
“She converted a lot of stuff around the paint, she was getting good looks, and the girls were getting her the ball in good position, so it was a good combo.”
Central Bucks East (1-0) will host Neshaminy on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Olivia Scotti buried four three-pointers – one in each quarter – on her way to a game-high 18 points, leading the Redskins to the decisive win in their opener. The senior forward was one of three Redskins in double figures. Senior Kristin Curley added 15 points, which included a pair of threes, and senior Emily Tantala contributed 11 points, including one three.
All told, the Redskins buried seven shots from beyond the arc.
“Olivia Scotti had a great shooting night,” coach Joe Lally said. “Emily Tantala played great defense and chipped in 11 points. Kristin Curley had 15 points and quarterbacked us to a win.”
Behind seven points from Scotti and five from Curley, the Redskins opened up a 14-8 lead after one quarter. They outscored the Titans 15-5 in the second quarter – sparked by seven points from Tantala – and went into halftime with a 29-13 lead. They never looked back.
Sophomore Taylor Hinkle led the Titans with 11 points – nine in the opening half. Junior Sam Waltrich added seven.
Neshaminy (1-0) will face Central Bucks East on Saturday at 2pm at CB East. Central Bucks South (0-1) will take on Gwynedd Mercy at noon., also at CB East.

The Falcons took care of business in a hurry, opening up a 17-3 lead after one quarter. Sophomore Ava Sciolla led the offensive charge with nine points, including a three. Mackenzie Rooney also buried a shot from beyond the arc, but defense was the story of an opening quarter that was the difference in the game.
“We jumped on them early, and it was a really physical game, which we expected,” coach Frank Sciolla said. “We created turnovers and got out on the break nicely. They are a really athletic team, and they did a good job pushing tempo minutes.”
The Falcons took a 28-13 lead into halftime and never saw their lead threatened.
Nicole Pompili added 11 points, which included a 5-for-6 effort at the foul line. Mary Miller had nine points, and Mia Spinelli chipped in seven.
“I was really happy for Mia Spinelli as it was her first varsity start,” Sciolla said. “Lauren Dignan also gave us good minutes inside. Sophomore Nicole Pompili was very active in her first start as well.
“Ava (Sciolla) and Bella (Arcuri) did what we expect them to do up top in terms of taking care of the ball and really did a good job finding open people. It’s a good point of reference, and we have much to work on, especially in terms of maintaining our intensity on the defensive end.”
Mastery Charter’s Angel Sanders led all scorers with 21 points.
Pennsbury (1-0) will face New Hope-Solebury in Saturday’s title game at 5:30 p.m.

Emily Thomas turned in a glittering 23-point effort, and Alice Hall added 11 points, but the visiting Lions – led by the 24-point effort of Regan Chrencik – had an answer for every Hatter run en route to the hard fought win.
The Hatters, who led 13-11 after one quarter, trailed 24-22 at halftime. It was still a two-point game after three quarters (36-34), and the Lions outscored the Hatters 20-17 in the pivotal fourth quarter to hold on for the win.
Also for the Hatters, Cam Ryan and Jada Mills both added six points.
Hatboro-Horsham (0-1) will take on Mastery Charter in Saturday’s consolation game at 2 p.m.

Galloping Ghosts Classic
Abington 52, Springfield-Delco 50
Jada Helm isn’t gong to forget her varsity debut any time soon.
The Abington freshman scored on a putback with one second remaining to propel the Ghosts to the dramatic win.
“We got the ball with about 40 seconds to go, and we held for one shot,” coach Dan Marsh said. “Khalis (Whiting) missed a 12-footer, and Jada, our freshman, got the rebound and put it back with one second. They called a timeout with one second, but they weren’t able to score.”
The Ghosts trailed 19-11 after one quarter but trimmed three points off that lead in the second quarter when Helm, Alley Holden, Amanda Jackson and April Bowser each buried a three-pointer. The Ghosts trailed 29-24 at the intermission.
“Even crazier, Khalis (Whiting) got in foul trouble, so we played almost the whole second quarter without her,” Marsh said. “That was when Abril Bower, another freshman, stepped in and played really well.
“(Springfield-Delco) is good. They’re going to win a lot of games, especially in their conference.”
The Ghosts – behind eight points from Whiting – went on a 20-8 third quarter tear to go on top 44-37, setting the stage for the dramatic final quarter.
“We gave up 19 points in the first quarter, being freshmen, making a lot of mistakes, trying too hard and fouling, but our kids never quit,” Marsh said. “They just kept battling and battling and battling, and we finally got the lead towards the end of the fourth quarter.
“They took it right back. Khalis (Whiting) got fouled and tied it. They missed and we came down and held for the last shot.”
Whiting brings veteran experience to a young squad that will be relying on more than a few freshmen. The sophomore point guard led a balanced Ghost attack with 13 points while Krysten Brown added 10. Bowser and Jackson both had nine points and Helm had eight.
“Everybody is new, and our bench was even shorter tonight because our one freshman who’s a starter – Cire Worely, a 6-foot guard – did not play because she’s a little bit injured,” Marsh said. “Our other freshman – Maura Day – is a soccer player, and she was away for a soccer tournament.
“There are at least four freshmen that are going to contribute on a regular basis for us. Two of them will start and the other two will come off the bench.”
The Cougars’ Alexa Abbonizio led all scorers with 24 points.
Abington (1-0) will take on Central Bucks West on Saturday at 2 p.m.
“This week is a really tough week for us,” Marsh said. “Tomorrow we have CB West, we go to Souderton on Tuesday and Upper Dublin on Thursday. Tonight was a big game – we had to win this one.”

Friday’s opener was a roller coaster ride for the Bucks. They led by six after one quarter but found themselves deadlocked 22-22 at halftime. They appeared to seize control of the game after a 12-4 third quarter put them on top 34-26. That lead turned out to be anything but secure as West Catholic took a one-point lead in the game’s closing seconds and won by that margin.
Maddie Burke scored eight of her team-high 13 points in a first quarter that saw the Bucks go on top 12-6. Destiney McPhaul had the hot hand in the second, scoring 11 of her 15 points in the frame as West Catholic went on a 16-10 tear.
In the third quarter, sophomore Emily Spratt’s six points led a 12-4 West surge, but that would be their last hurrah as they managed just five points in a fourth quarter that saw them outscored 14-5.

Senior Mikaela Reese posted a double-double to lead the Indians. The lone returning starter from last year’s SOL Continental Conference championship squad, Reese finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The Indians led 6-3 at the end of the first quarter as both teams got off to a slow start. Behind five points from Jordan Zimmerman, the Indians outscored the Rams 10-2 in the second quarter to go into halftime with a commanding 16-5 advantage. The two teams spent the second half exchanging baskets, but the Rams never threatened.
Zimmerman added seven points, and a pair of freshmen also came up big in their varsity debut. Casey Harter added eight points, including a three, and Erin Bohmueller added six points, which included a perfect 4-for-4 effort at the foul line in the fourth quarter.
“It was a great first game with a lot of players contributing,” coach Lynn Carroll said.
Souderton (1-0) will take on St. Basil in Saturday’s title game at 3 p.m. St. Basil upended Abington Heights 39-20.

The Golden Bears trailed by just one point heading into the final quarter, but the Trojans refused to relinquish the lead.
“I give Parkland a ton of credit,” UM coach Matt Carroll said. “Every time we cut it to a one-possession game they stepped up and made a play. The score isn’t what we wanted, but we wanted to challenge ourselves with our non-league schedule this year and this game will help us in the long run.”
The Golden Bears – sparked by five points from Bean Hughes - led 7-6 after one quarter but trailed 12-9 at the intermission. They were down by one (23-22) heading into the final quarter but never could get over the hump.
Hughes led all scorers with 17 points.
“First games are always tricky because you only know so little about the team you are playing, especially when it is a team not from our conference,” Carroll said. “We knew Parkland had some size and I thought we did a good job with it.
“AbbyEllen Wood (5’7) is a great post defender, and she was phenomenal defensively against (Lindsay) Berger (6’2). Defensively, we were good but we struggled offensively, especially in the first half. It looked like a first game for both team in the first half. That’s to be expected this time of year.”

The host Panthers opened up a 30-22 halftime lead, survived a two-point third quarter and held off the visiting Lady Panthers for the win. Courtney Bragen led a balanced Tennent attack with 14 points.
“I thought we came out with a lot of energy and executed well early,” Tennent coach Laura Whitney said. “We had some stretches where we didn’t handle their pressure and made some bad decisions, but every time they made a run we were able to answer.
“It certainly wasn’t pretty, but a win is a win. I thought our girls showed a lot of toughness and took a big step in the right direction. Sure, there’s plenty we need to improve on, but the experience our girls gained tonight in a close competitive game will help us tremendously as we go through the season.”
Leading Tennent in the first half were Bragen and Hannah Reimel with six points each.
Cheltenham had a 6-2 scoring edge in a low-scoring third quarter to make it a 32-28 game. The visitors didn’t go down quietly, but Tennent held on for the win.
In addition to Bragen, Reimel – who had a pair of threes - and Erin Hart both had eight points, and Emily Thran had seven.
“Erin Hart was solid on both ends of the court,” Whitney said. “Courtney Bragen was really impressive in her debut after missing her freshman year from a torn ACL. She plays with such intensity and our team feeds off of that.
“Direidy Serrano provided a huge spark off the bench defensively and made some big baskets.”
Umayrah Sulayman – who had three three-pointers – led the visitors with 15 points. Assata Robinson added 10, and Cashmear Moore had eight points.
William Tennent will face Conwell-Egan in Saturday’s title game at 7 p.m. Cheltenham (0-1) will take on George Washington in the consolation game at 5:30 p.m.

Sophie Cweiber scored 19 points to lead the Rams to a win in a contest that was over almost before it began.
The Rams rolled to a 22-4 lead over the Pirates at the end of one quarter, and although the Pirates outscored the Rams by three in the second quarter, Pennridge still took a commanding 38-23 lead into halftime. Pennridge outscored its visitors 25-9 in the second half.
Also for the Rams, Evelyn Loughery added 10 points while Corinn Mart, Julia Kreider and Emma Pyne had eight each.
Pennridge (1-0) will face Southern Lehigh on Saturday at 3 p.m., and Palisades will take on Harry S Truman at 6 p.m.

The young Colonials – who don’t have a senior on their roster - raced out of the gate to an 18-3 lead after one quarter and upped that advantage to 35-7 by halftime on their way to a rout of the Royals.
Junior Anna McTamney’s 13 points led a balanced attack that saw four Colonials finish in double figures. Sophomore Kaitlyn Flanagan and freshman Erin Daley both added 11 points while sophomore Jordyn Thomas had 10. Junior Gabby Cooper added seven points, and freshman Chloe McGrorty chipped in with six.

The Indians – minus their entire starting lineup as well a longtime coach Lou Palkovics, who stepped down at the end of last season - found themselves deadlocked with the Lions 17-17 at halftime after falling behind by three at the end of one quarter. A 12-6 third quarter surge gave the Indians a lead they would not lose.
Senior Abby Jones led a balanced Indian attack with 10 points while freshman Jaden Wan added eight and sophomore Riley Hamilton had seven.

The Konkrete Kids opened up a 19-9 lead after one quarter and took a 32-19 lead into halftime. The Golden Hawks spent the rest of the game playing catch up.
"Overall, I was very pleased with how we moved the ball - that’s been a focal point this year, and the girls did and created some real good offensive opportunities for each other," coach Blair Klump said. "We did a good job with our initial defense, but we really got hurt by second chance opportunities.
"We need to get better at team rebounding and taking pride in that area. We don’t have a ton of size so it needs to be a collective effort. We did a good job in our set defense we need to finish the possession by rebounding better."
The Golden Hawks outscored the Konkrete Kids 29-17 in the second half.
We battled in the second half and got it back to seven with the ball but could not get over the hump," Klump said. "Northampton executes really well and didn’t allow us go on multiple extended runs.
"I was proud of the resiliency we showed down 14 at one point. Our assist-to-turnover ratio was in the positive which is a major improvement. The girls did a good job of playing together. We get back at it Saturday against a Coatesville team who will also be looking to even their record."
Nicole Blaustein led the way for the Hawks, finishing with 18 points, two assists and two steals. Montanna Chambers added nine points, four rebounds and three steals, and Hannah Binder had eight points. Jenna Culp was the top rebounder with seven and also led the defense with three steals to go along with five assists and three points. Carley Irvin added six points and a team high six steals.

Abby Plaugher had an impressive varsity debut, scoring a game-high 11 points to lead the Knights to the opening night win. The freshman scored eight of her points in the first half – six in the pivotal second quarter that saw the Knights turn a 12-10 advantage after one quarter into a 28-19 halftime lead. They led the rest of the way.
Val McGriff added nine points, which included a 5-for-7 effort at the foul line. Rachel Dunn had eight points while Carley Adams and Alli Lindsay both had six.
“We were really well balanced in scoring tonight with freshman Abby Plaugher our leading scorer,” coach Jen Carangi said. “Our starters played solid, and we got huge minutes off the bench from Plaugher, junior Rachel Dunn and freshman Ali Johns.
“It was a great team win and a nice way to start the season.”
North Penn (1-0) will host Archbishop Carroll in a non-league game Monday.

Haley Keenan scored 23 points and Chloe Munyon was also in double figures with 12, but the Owls couldn’t stop the Patriots, who erupted for 38 second-half points en route to the win.
Delaney Bell added seven points for the Owls, who trailed by six after one quarter. They outscored the Patriots 17-11 in the second quarter to knot the score 27-27. The Patriots used a 21-10 third quarter burst to seize control of the game.
Bensalem (0-1) will travel to Conwell-Egan on Monday for a non-league game.
