Hatters Tipoff Tournament

Pennsbury 37, New Hope-Solebury 27

A Falcon squad that has been battling injuries and illness gutted out a win over the Lions, defending a tournament title they own.

Nicole Pompili’s 13-point effort led the Falcons. Ava Sciolla, who has been under the weather for the past two weeks, added nine points.

“It’s been tough,” coach Frank Sciolla said. “Mary Miller was sick last night, and the two of them played. Tonight both were really hurting, and you could see it – they both looked awful before the game.

“At halftime, Ava was white as a ghost, and she went out for the first minute or two, and we said, ‘That’s it,’ and we got the trainer. She was out, and Mia Spinelli, our starting center, rolled her ankle in the first half, so now you’re really pulling people up, and the bench was great. That was really the story of the game.”

The Falcons trailed 12-2 midway through the first quarter but outscored the Lions 35-15 the rest of the way.

“First of all, the leadership was great up top from Bella (Arcuri),” Sciolla said. “Mary Miller really battled, but I think the girl that turned the game - in the second quarter, we changed defenses a little bit. Rachel Saxon is a really good player for them, and we put Abbi Nassivera on her, and said ‘Don’t let her catch it.’ Abbi really played hard and got a big offensive putback basket for us and kind of allowed us to get back into the game.

“Once Ava couldn’t play and Mia Spinelli is out , Lauren Dignan – this was her first varsity experience. Diggy came in, and she was really good on defense and pulled down some big rebounds for us. We survived again some terrible free throw shooting to win the game.”

Also for the Falcons, Miller added seven points – six in the first half. She also had five rebounds, four deflections, two steals and two forced turnovers. Arcuri added six points, four rebounds and two assists. She also had four forced turnovers, a pair of deflections and one steal. Nassivera had three rebounds, three assists, two deflections and one forced turnover. Pompili had three steals and one forced turnover. Sciolla had three rebounds in limited action.

Neshaminy 52, Central Bucks East 44

The Redskins limited the Patriots to just 20 points through three quarters. East scored 24 points in the final quarter, but by that time, the Redskins had built up a 36-20 advantage.

“They play tough, they play physical, they can get the ball inside, and they’ve got great coaches,” Neshaminy coach Joe Lally said of the Patriots.

Emily Chmiel had another big outing for the Patriots, scoring a game-high 26 points.

“We were able to hold the big girl to 15,” Lally said of Chmiel. “She had 11 in the fourth quarter, so the box score is going to say 26, but the reality was we were up 16 going into the fourth quarter, and they had six team fouls. We got 12 of our 16 points in the fourth quarter at the foul line.

“Kristin Curley was 7-for-8 at the foul line in the quarter, Emily Tantala was 4-for-4 and Liv Scotti was 1-for 2.”

Curley led the Redskins with 17 points, which included a 12-for-14 effort at the foul line.

“She was great again,” Lally said of his senior point guard. “She just sees the floor so well. I wish I could get the statistics more quickly, but I think she had a half a dozen assists.

“It was a real physical game. She hit the floor several times. She’s just really stepping up.”

Olivia Scotti added 12 points, and Emily Tantala had eight.

William Tennent Tipoff Tournament

William Tennent 33, Conwell-Egan 30

The Panthers opened up an 11-7 halftime lead and held on to win the tournament title.

“We are certainly happy to get the win tonight and start the season 2-0, but disappointed with the way we played,” coach Laura Whitney said. “We didn’t come out with the same energy from last night and struggled to find any rhythm offensively.  We just never seemed to get anything going the first half.  Luckily, Conwell Egan didn’t get much going either.”

Both teams came to life offensively in the second half, and the Panthers survived an Eagles’ comeback bid and held on for the win.

“The second half we were able to utilize some full court pressure and force some turnovers, which gave us the lift we needed to get our offense going,” Whitney said. “I thought we showed more patience the second half with better ball movement and looked to be more aggressive.

“We were finally able to extend the game to 10, but for the second night in a row we allowed the other team back in the game with poor foul shooting, timely turnovers and a few missed box outs.  Even with that being said, I’m still proud of our girls for grinding it out and finding a way to get the win despite not playing our best.”

Hannah Reimel led the Panthers with 12 points, which included a pair of threes. Erin Hart added nine points.

William Tennent (2-0) will travel to Springfield Township for a non-league game on Tuesday.

Galloping Ghosts Classic

Central Bucks West 41, Abington 33

The visiting Bucks – behind five points from Olivia Irons – opened up a 14-7 lead after one quarter. They spent the rest of the game exchanging baskets with the young Ghosts.

Anna Blue’s nine points on three three-pointers led the Bucks. Jess Broskey added eight point points while Paige Gilbert and Emily Spratt both had eight points in a contest that saw Maddie Burke – the focal point of the Ghosts’ defense - limited to just three points.

The win was the first for coach Zach Sibel, who liked what he saw.

“Maddie’s leadership has been incredible,” the Bucks’ coach said. “Even though she didn’t score in double digits, she impacted the game in so many ways.

“Emily Spratt really stepped up and showed leadership as a sophomore. Paige Gilbert got our team going with toughness, taking three charges and adding 11 rebounds. Olivia Irons got us going offensively and controlled the offensive end.”

For the Ghosts, sophomore point guard Khalis Whiting led the way with 15 points, which included a 5-for-6 effort at the foul line. Jada Helm added eight points.

Owen J Roberts Tipoff Tournament

Council Rock South 53, Coatesville 42

The Golden Hawks rallied from an early deficit to earn their first win of the young season. The Hawks trailed 16-13 after one quarter but outscored the Raiders 16-5 in the second to go into halftime with a 29-21 lead.  They outscored the Raiders 26-21 in the second half.

“This was a good bounce-back game for us and a total team win,” coach Blair Klumpp said. “We had good balance with three girls in double figures, and we had a lot of important contributions from other girls who didn’t register double-digit points. That’s big for us because it shows we can pick each other up.

“We did much better rebounding the ball today than Friday night and we converted 23 points off their turnovers. I thought we came out a little sloppy, turning the ball over too much early almost trying to make the perfect pass. We did a much better job of settling and dictating pace and tempo in the second quarter. We got contributions from all four grade levels, which was something I thought was possible with the makeup of this team of four experienced upperclassmen and a younger group that is carving out roles or hungry for a bigger role.”

Nicole Blaustein – who earned a spot on the all-tournament team – led the Golden Hawks with 16 points to go along with a pair of assists. Hannah Binder added 13 points, four rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. Montanna Chambers contributed 11 points, a team-high seven steals as well as three assists. Jenna Culp added six points, five rebounds and three steals, and Riana Szydlik had six points and four rebounds. Carley Irvin had eight assists and seven rebounds.

“Hannah got into a nice rhythm offensively and looked more comfortable within our offense,” Klumpp said. “We did a good job of getting her the ball on mismatches.

“Jenna played a really sound all-around game for us and battled on the glass all weekend. She provides some stability on the floor with her decision-making. Nicole had a good tournament both ends of the floor and was good in transition, particularly with decision-making on throwing it ahead, attacking, setting us up.

“Carley Irvin was a great example of impacting the game without scoring. She had eight assists and made several other real sound plays and decisions that set up good shots for herself and others. She guarded their best player when we went man. She had a really strong tournament from a floor game standpoint and averaged seven assists for the tournament. She’s doing a good job of implementing the stuff we are practicing - jump stop, driving, drawing and dishing.

“Two sophomores, Montanna and Riana, combined for five threes and contributed defensively with steals and rebounds respectively. And Karissa Smedley gave us good minutes off the bench, changing out tempo defensively, and keeping possessions alive.

“It was good to even out our record, see the girls play together and also see some things we are working on go into place and give us some things to work on.”

“It was a great defensive effort, which will be our strength this season,” said coach Brittany Bamford, crediting the Panthers’ defensive press and finishing underneath as the key to the third quarter surge.

Freshman Carolyn Sipprell added nine points, which included a four-for-five effort at the foul line.

“They are such great hustlers and wonderful people as well,” Bamford said of her freshman duo of Sipprell and Catalano, who combined for 20 points. “Abigail Dickson did a great job in finishing underneath the basket, which is important as one of the only seniors on this team.”
