CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 7, NESHAMINY 3
By Ben Reese
HATFIELD -- For the first 16 minutes of Central Bucks South's game against Neshaminy, it appeared that someone else was wearing the blue and white sweaters with Titans on the front.
It certainly didn't look like the CB South that has won state titles and Flyers Cups. The 'Skins – 24 hours removed from a 10-0 rout of William Tennent - dominated play the entire first period and came out of it with a 3-0 lead.
Midway through the first period, Titan coach Shaun McGinty called a timeout. He blistered his team, telling them what they had to do to get back into the game.
It seems to have worked. South came out for the second period and scored five times en route to a 7-3 Suburban High School Hockey League win.
"I just think that it, unfortunately, was a bad start," said McGinty. "I don't think the kids were looking (past) anybody. I just don't think they came ready to play.
"They were flat in the first period. We're never flat in the first period."
And the timeout?
"I actually wanted to do that after the first goal," he said, "but (assistant coach) Tyler (Skroski) called me off.
"They just needed to wake up. I don't think that they purposely came unprepared or that they overlooked Neshaminy. Three to nothing was a hard thing to come back from. I just pulled them in, challenged them as much as I possibly could to get them back on track."
It worked. In the space of nearly five minutes of the second period, the Titans had tied the game and then added two more goals in the second and two more in the third for the win.
"We had them on the ropes," said Neshaminy coach Matt DeMatteo. "They switched some things up, and we just didn't adapt as well as I would have liked."
South forward Colin Abbonizio, who scored three goals, gave credit for the comeback to the coaches and his veteran teammates.
"When you see they're up three goals, you say we've got to get our stuff together," he said. "A lot of it was from the coaches.
"They really kept us in it. We just went out there and played our game and got seven goals.
"We have a lot of upperclassmen leading the younger guys along pretty well. The younger guys are always listening. They're willing to take what they can get from the older guys.
"Neshaminy's a playoff team. We told these guys that this was a playoff game. You've got to come out ready to play."
In the opening period, the 'Skins got goals from Matt Buchinski, Nolan Geria and Joey DeMatteo to jump out to that 3-0 lead after one stanza.
But things changed rapidly once the second period started. Abbonizio got South going 37 seconds into the period with his first goal. At the 3:18 mark, Matt Milanesi cut the deficit to one goal, and at 4:53, Abbonizio tied the game at 3-3.
Slightly more than five minutes later, Dominic Patrone broke that tie. Abbonizio notched his third goal of the game and the second period at 13:25.
Patrone and Ryan Gingras added icing to the cake with third-period goals. Patrone's came short-handed and Gingras' goal was on the power play.
One thing the Titans did well, even in the first period, was to keep Neshaminy's Robert Seewagen – who came into the game with 15 goals - off the scoreboard.
"With someone of Seewagen's capability, we really wanted to take our top defenseman, Gingo (Ryan Gingras), and mirror him," McGinty explained. "From our red line into our zone, Gingo has his eye on him. He (Seewagen) is the kind of kid who can really open up a game."
"I thought Robert played a good game," DeMatteo said. "Any team that plays us is going to key on Rob. There's a few guys on our team you know to key on and he's one of them."
When push came to shove on Thursday, CB South turned itself around and looked like it has in the past.

Goals by Joseph Hornung and Ryan McColgan to close out the period gave the ‘Skins their five-goal advantage.
