RJ Macnamara – University of Delaware (Football)
Major: Undecided
Final list of colleges: Delaware, Temple, Monmouth
Reasons for choosing Delaware: “When I went on my visit to Delaware, it just had the feel I was looking for. It was the campus I was looking for. Meeting the coaches, it was the people I wanted to be around for another four to five years.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in football at the collegiate level?
“I started thinking football was my sport in ninth grade when coach Beck called me up (to varsity). I had started lacrosse a lot later than some other kids that played, so I never really thought – this is going to be my sport to play.
“Last year when all the college coaches started to come, that’s when I thought I had a chance to go D-I because I never really thought before I had that chance. It feels great because all my hard work is finally starting to pay off.”
Coach Dick Beck says: “We’re all proud of RJ. He’s a great team leader, a three-and-a-half year starter, and a four-year letter winner. He’s a leader on and off the field, and he leads by example.
“(Football) is all about size and speed. If you don’t have size and speed, it doesn’t matter what your attitude is about. You have to have that ability. He definitely came with the framework. He’s got a great group of friends on the team, and as a freshman, the older kids brought him along, which is good for a young guy to see how they reacted and how they led, so as he went through his years, he wanted to turn into that leader that everybody looked to. Obviously, he did an outstanding job doing that.
“In most of the big games, he’s usually making some type of play, whether it’s offensively or defensively, or if we needed a pep talk in the locker room, he was ready to step up at any time. It’s always nice not to have just his ability but his leadership on the team.
“It’s been a great pleasure. I think he’ll have great success at Delaware and do well in the classroom. The future is bright for him.”
