SOL Wrestling: CB East & Quakertown Impressive in Tourney Action

CB EAST EMERGES AS A CONTENDER AT BIG RED DUALS

By Glenn Kaiser

Central Bucks East (CBE) placed third at the Big Red Duals hosted by Souderton H.S. on Saturday.  It wasn’t the placement that caught everyone’s attention, it was the way they performed and who they beat that did.  The Patriots knocked off a powerful Neshaminy team 39-27 in a quarterfinal match-up in this seeded dual event.

East won 8 of the 14 matches against Neshaminy, posting five falls and a major decision accounting for 34 of their 40 points recorded during the match.  CB East head coach Dave Scarpill was penalized a team point during the match, reducing the final score to 39.  The Patriots were down 10 points heading into the last five bouts (17-27) when the tide turned.

East’s Quinn Collins shut out Neshaminy’s solid Jack Toy 12-0 at 195-pounds to start the comeback.  Danny Eckley (220), Tyler McClure (285) and Max Bean (106) followed with three straight pin-falls to complete the comeback victory for the Patriots.

East dropped a 49-30 dual in the semifinals to AA power Saucon Valley to drop into the consolation final against Downingtown East for third-place.  Downingtown East (9-6) has been wrestling well of late, and with CBE not even considered in the D1 team rankings, seemed to be the favorites on paper.

However, CB East (5-1) rebounded from their lone loss of the season with a huge win over the Cougars, winning convincingly 43-26.  CB East notched nine victories in the dual and added bonus points in six of the nine wins.  The Patriots never trailed in this dual as they got out front early with five consecutive wins and a 24-0 lead.  Pins were recorded by Sean O’Donnell (126), Marcus Chernyshev (152), Quinn Collins (195) and Danny Eckley (220).

Saucon Valley defeated Central Dauphin 43-30 to win the team title at the Big Red Duals, which was stacked with notable teams.

Quakertown looms large on the Patriots schedule on Jan. 22, 2020, just a day before the D1 Team Championships kick-off.  This match will most definitely determine the SOL Continental dual portion of the championship.  As both dual wins and placement at the league tournament account for the points that determine the team title.

CB East will surely be noticed by the rankers and the district dual seeding committee next Sunday with these signature dual victories.

QUAKERTOWN REMAINS UNDEFEATED AS THE PANTHERS CAPTURE THEIR OWN DUAL TOURNEY

The Quakertown wrestling team continues their dream season with a team title at their own Quakertown Duals.  There is no doub, that the Panthers (13-0) have solidified the #1 seed for the upcoming D1 Team Championships.  It has been awhile since Q-town has made a trip to Hershey for the PIAA Team Championships.  They were the District 1 Team Champs in 2009 and finished third in 2008.

The Panthers have quietly put together a resume like no other here in D1.  Not only have they been the first SOL team to down CR South in seven years, they have just flat out been better than any other team they have faced this season.

Saturday was no different in regards to their conviction and determination.   They continued their winning ways, defeating two accomplished teams from D11 - Bethlehem Liberty (11-4) 34-28 and Stroudsburg (8-4) 43-25 - en route to the team title.  In addition, they trounced traditional D12 power Father Judge (6-5) 62-14 in round two action.

Even if Quakertown does not land the #1 seed in D1, the Panthers will be a force to be reckoned with and a match-up nightmare for all other D1 Dual opponents.  The reason for their 2019-20 success has been a recipe of 14 solid wrestlers up and down the lineup with some depth,  added in with excellent coaching, experience and talent.  Not to mention their solid dual and individual tourney schedule.

The team is led by a group of accomplished wrestlers this season in freshmen Zach Borzio (106) with a record of 18-8, Todd McGann (113) 17-5, Kyle Miller (120) 20-5, Vinny DeSpirito (126) 21-5, Zack Lewis (132) 17-2, Dom DeFalco (138) 21-4, Patrick McCoy (145) 16-7, Aaron Sanchez (152) 12-6, Kyle Goodwin (160) 17-7, Dusten Pompei (170) 13-7, Freddie Retter (195) 13-9, Ralph Martin (220) 13-9, and heavyweight Jeremy McGuigan at 22-4.  They have all 14 weights covered with winning wrestlers, as back-ups and part-time grapplers also have winning records.

That includes Micah Kunkle (182-195) 7-4, Kaden Roesener (170-182) 6-5.

This group of talent and depth thru out the roster has Head Coach Kurt Handel anticipating a spectacular finish.
