Bergey’s Inc.
SOL SHSHL Player of the Week
This recognition is sponsored by Bergey’s Inc. Athletes are chosen based on nomination of coaches, and the recipient must be a positive presence on the ice and a credit to the game. Consideration also is given to the student-athlete’s standing in the school and community.
Jake Machlovitz, Senior, Pennsbury High School
A four-year varsity player, Machlovitz has been an alternate captain since his sophomore year. The offenseman has nine goals and four assists through 11 games. He is an honor student and a member of the school’s concert band.
Note from the coach:
“This is my third year as a head coach, and when I took over, we were lighter in numbers and pretty young,” coach Ryan Daley said. “Jake was a sophomore, and just attitude-wise, his play at practice and games really stuck out even though he was 15 or 16 years old at the time, and he’s really built on it, too. We’ve gotten more players and we’ve gotten better, but we’re still young. We have three freshmen on the team. He does great with the younger guys, getting them involved and part of the team. He helps them out on the ice as well.
“He’s an offenseman and usually he plays center. He’s one of our fastest skaters, and he has a heck of a shot, and when it’s hit on the net, it’s usually going in. He has a really good shot - wrist shot and slap shot, and he’s a big threat to score. He has worked hard to improve himself and others on the team year in and year out and has been a great example for our younger players.”
About Jake:
Best memory playing high school hockey: My senior year Thanksgiving classic game against Neshaminy and beating them 4-3. Getting my first high school hat trick and an assist.
Part of game I enjoy most: The competition between two teams who put it all out to win for their teammates.
How did you get involved in hockey? My cousin had some gear he was no longer using and I had recently stopped playing baseball, so I had no sports going on. I decided to give the sport a try. Also, I have loved the sport since a young age but never played.
My role model is: P.K. Subban
Music on mobile device: Mostly classic rock, metal and R&B
Favorite food: Chipotle Chicken Burrito
Favorite class: Math class
Future plans: Go to college, graduate, get a job, make a living.
Four people I’d invite to a dinner party: Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Mayer, BB King, Barack Obama.
