ABINGTON WINS SOL AMERICAN
By Glenn Kaiser
Horsham, PA-The Abington Ghosts stormed thru the SOL American Wrestling Individual Championships at Hatboro-Horsham Saturday, posting 191.5 points and outdistancing the field by 74 points to essentially capture the 2020 American crown with the tournament victory. The Ghosts stand at 5-0 in the league in dual meet competitions with both Hatboro-Horsham and Springfield still on the schedule. Abington will need to win at least one of these two duals to win the overall title.
H-H is 3-2 in league action and Springfield is 4-1, having their best season in over a decade in the league. So, there is work to be done, but winning the SOL American tournament title has put them in the driver’s seat. The Ghosts crowned three champs in lightweights Matt McCaughey (113) and Adam Andrews (120), and joining them on top of the podium was Shane Andrews at 145-pounds. Jake Werner was second at 106lbs, dropping a narrow decision to Upper Dublin’s Dan Gorman. Gorman secured back points late in the match to secure the victory.
Tommy Brett was the runner-up at 132lbs along with Nick Castorina (160) and Robert Glemser (170) for the Ghosts. They medaled 11 out of 14 wrestlers entered in the tourney.
Wissahickon’s Matt Fritz won the most competitive weight class at 138-pounds, avenging a Wednesday night loss to Abington’s Jake Rose 11-4 in the semifinals. Fritz, who was seeded third then took down Upper Moreland’s Chris Walker in the finals 5-2. Fritz beat both the #1 and #2 seeds in Walker and Rose respectively. Wissahickon had four champs, the most of any school. Joining Fritz where 132-pounder Christian Smalley, Kevin Salmon (170) and Dan Keller (195). The Trojans finished third in the team scoring.
Despite no champs, Upper Moreland was the team runner-up with finalists Charles Hogan (113), Walker (138), Tyler Patterson (145), Owen Dunleavy (195) and Sean Fagan at heavy weight. Mike Miller (Plymouth-Whitemarsh) remained undefeated (23-0) in the heavy weight division with his decking of Fagan (U. Moreland) in the finals.
H-H matched Abington with three champions in Joe Martini, III (126), A.J. Tamburrino (152) and Logan Flynn (220). Tamburrino was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler by the Coaches. Cheltenham’s Isiah Stehman (160) and Zach Gaffin (182) won titles for the Panthers.
