ABINGTON KING OF THE SOL AMERICAN
By Glenn Kaiser
Abington, PA - After Wednesday’s match against Hatboro-Horsham, I asked Abington head coach David Oseia - if I had asked him four years ago when he took over the program how long it would take for the Abington Ghosts to win a league title, what would he have said…he replied “probably a decade.” Turn the page and the Ghosts are the SOL American Champions. With a strong core of juniors, the team is still relatively young and talented. With only two seniors who are regular starters, the Ghosts will be scary for a while longer in the American Conference.
This young, fierce and determined squad clinched the SOL American Conference by demolishing Hatboro-Horsham 63-18 to up their record to 6-0 in league competition. And with their SOL American tournament championship secured this past Saturday at H-H, locked up the title regardless of their match results against Springfield next week.
The Ghosts ran off six straight pins against the Hatters, amassing a 35-0 lead. Jake Werner hit a gator roll cement job at 106-pounds to open the match, and Abington never looked back. The Ghosts were just more physical than the Hatters and more talented from top to bottom. Adam Andrews hit H-H’s Joe Martini with a head and arm maneuver, downing the Hatter by fall to extend the Ghosts’ lead to 24-0 at 126lbs.
Jake Rose then executed a perfect single leg to a cradle, decking H-H’s Sammy Smith under a minute in the first period to secure the win for the Ghosts upping the lead to 36 love. Abington was clearly more prepared and fired up for the match then the Hatters. Shane Kibler used the Ghosts’ patented head and chin hold for a pin-fall at 145. The Ghosts posted seven straight falls thru 145lbs before H-H got on the board with A.J. Tamburrino’s pin at 152.

Jake Wood (H-H) and Nick Castorina battled in the only decision of the match. Castorina rode out a 1-0 victory at 160. The Ghosts tallied 10 falls overall in the match. H-H’s Patrick Chapman returned to the mat at 195-pounds after recovering from a football injury and recorded a fall and Logan Flynn did the same at 220 to round out the scoring for Hatters.
It was a fine Senior Night for the Ghosts with many Abington alumni in the stands to watch the first Ghosts league title in long time. Coach Osei reflected on the hard work and time put in by the kids in the wrestling room and clear expectations of the kids by the coaching staff that led to the team’s success this season.
