Sophia DeFebo – Misericordia University (Softball)

Major:  Psychology

Final list of colleges:  Misericordia, Penn State Abington, Immaculata

Reasons for choosing Misericordia:  “I liked Misericordia the best because of the location – it was the farthest, they had the major that I really like, and I think I connected with the coaches best at Misericordia.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in softball at the collegiate level?  “Sophomore year my coaches were really pushing – you are good enough to play at the collegiate level. I was like, ‘Okay, it would be fun’ because I love the sport, and I didn’t want to stop after my senior year. I started e-mailing coaches, some of them reached out. One thing led to another. I was offered, and it was a big day.”

Coach Kevin Rosini says: “Sophia DeFebo came in last season and helped out in the outfield when Maddie got hurt. She will be one of our main pitchers this season. She’s a good all-around player. She’s worked hard and improved at the plate. I’m excited to see her on the mound this season with Kylie Kenney graduating. I’m so proud of all three of the girls. I’m happy that they’re part of our team. I can’t wait to see what they have this season. I’m excited.”

About Sophia:

Favorite food:  Waffles & Pancakes

Favorite TV shows:  One Tree Hill

Favorite artist:  Queen

Ally McDaid – Widener University (Softball)

Major:  Nursing

Final list of colleges:  Widener, Jefferson

Reasons for choosing Widener: “I was looking at Jefferson but not for softball. I just wanted to be a part of their nursing program, but when I met the Widener coach, I realized it was just as good of a nursing program and I could play softball there. I just thought it was a better fit, and I was really happy to be able to do both because nursing is a really hard major to play sports with, but they make it work.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in softball at the collegiate level?  “In 10th grade, my coaches started asking – who wants to play in college and talked about how you should reach out to coaches. I always thought about it because I could never imagine not playing. I always liked to be busy and have stuff to do, so I didn’t want to have down time. I like being active – it gives me something to do, and it’s how I make all my friends.”

Coach Kevin Rosini says: “Ally McDaid is a three-year varsity player. She’s been a utility player and has played all over for us, which has been great. She’s a key contributor on the bases, she plays well defensively, and she does the little things well. She’s very well respected amongst her teammates. I’m happy to have her on our team.”

Olivia Robinson – Widener University (Softball)

Major:  Nursing

Final list of colleges:  Widener, Alvernia, Kutztown

Reasons for choosing Widener:  “Once I went to Widener and I met the coaches and they showed me around and gave me a feel for what it’s going to be like there, I fell on love with it the second I walked on campus, so I knew it was that (school) for sure.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in softball at the collegiate level?  “I was late figuring out what I wanted to do. I knew I wanted to pursue at least trying to get offers, but I didn’t know if I wanted to go through with them. I always wanted to go to Penn State or Pitt and didn’t really think about softball too much.

“After I started getting a little bit of attention and people were telling me it would be a good idea to do it and they felt I could do it, I thought about it – I don’t want to give up yet, I don’t want it to be my last time walking on the field at the end of the season.”

Coach Kevin Rosini says:  “Olivia has been a starting outfielder for us the last two seasons. She’s a solid player, she’s solid defensively, and she was a key contributor to our championship in 2018. She’s a leader on our team. She’ll be a three-year starter this year in the outfield. I look forward to seeing what she can do her senior year as she heads off to Widener.”
