Gabby Zalot – Valparaiso University (Soccer)
Major: Political Science
Final list of colleges: Valparaiso, Marist, Winthrop, UMBC
Reasons for choosing Valparaiso: “I visited the other schools first, but when I went to Valpo, I got a different feeling. I felt the academics of the school fit me better than the other choices. Academics are really important to me, so that’s why I picked Valpo.”
What was the progression that led you to playing soccer at the collegiate level? “Basically, since I was a little, little kid, I was always was like, ‘I want to play in college, I want to play at the highest level possible,’ so it was kind of natural for me. Going into high school, I was already thinking about my choices and where I wanted to go.”
Coach Kim Lindemann says: “We were lucky enough to have Gabby come to our soccer camp when she was still in middle school, and that was the first glimpse of Gabby we had ever seen. We were excited about the future for her, and we knew the future of our program was bright when we saw a player like her enter in middle school. She’s one of the most technically sound players that we’ve ever seen in this program, and her ability to beat players on the ball and pull moves and throw players in the wrong direction is what makes her such a skilled and valuable player. She has been the heart and soul of our center midfield for the past four years, and we have really designed our level of play around Gabby and around the type of player that she is. She’s definitely a once-in-a-lifetime player that we’ll see here at Pennsbury, and we know that the skill that she has is going to make her really successful moving forward at the college level.
“Off the field, Gabby is equally impressive. She’s a stellar student, she takes care of business on and off the field, and more importantly, she’s one of the kindest people we’ve ever met. Gabby was a captain this year, and while she wasn’t the most vocal captain all the time, she could always be found doing the right things. She set the tone in her actions, not just in her words. She was the player that was always making sure the team was where they needed to be when they needed to be, and as a coaching staff, she made our lives so easy and let us take care of the soccer while she took care of all the other aspects of a team. The team loves her, they believed in her, and they knew she always had their back, and they knew she was going to take care of business for them. We’re going to miss her on the field, we’re going to miss her off the field, we’re going to miss her leadership, and most importantly, I think I speak for myself and the rest of the coaching staff when I say that she is one of the most special players and special people that we will ever see here at Pennsbury.”
