Maggie Young – Monmouth University (Swimming)
Major: Pre-Med
Final list of colleges: Monmouth, Case Western, University of Vermont
Reasons for choosing Monmouth: “I liked the location a lot, and I felt the team atmosphere was a good fit for me. The whole college campus had a good feel to it, and also, I got into their honors program and their pre-med program.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in swimming at the collegiate level? “I started swimming when I was seven, and I was always the worst on the team. I was so bad, but I just liked it – I liked the people. It was around freshman year when I started specializing in events I was good at, and I realized I could go somewhere with this. Around freshman year is when I realized I wanted to continue beyond the high school level.”
Coach Tom Kane says: “Maggie Young is a four-year letter winner, our captain this year and the second fastest 500 freestyler in school history. For four years, she has led the way for our distance group. She’s just a wonderful, hardworking girl. Each year she’s improved and gotten better and better. I’m just proud to have been her coach. She’s the quintessential hardworking kid who wanted to be a good swimmer, a top swimmer, and she worked her way up to the top. She won the championship in the Suburban One meet with a career best 5:10 swim. I’m proud of her, and Monmouth College is getting one fine young lady and one fine swimmer.”
