Last Thursday, the North Penn girls’ lacrosse team honored its nine seniors with a drive-by that covered a major part of the district (and turned into a two-and-a-half hour event). Gifts and flowers were placed on the driveway at each senior’s home. Earlier in the day, the underclassmen added an artistic touch with chalk art in the driveway wishing the seniors well.
Coach Heather Mellow said: “This group of seniors – they’re awesome, they’re awesome girls. They all were going to see a lot of quality playing time. It wasn’t like other years where you might have somebody that’s substantially weaker and may not get a lot of playing time, but you love that kid so you keep them on the team. It wasn’t that situation. They were going to be a really strong group of seniors. I felt they were going to lead us to a great season. It’s so unfortunate, and most of them aren’t continuing on with their athletic careers.
“All of them are such good athletes, and the only senior that will be going on is Alexa Juska, who will be playing at Slippery Rock next year. You just wanted to give this last season to them. Hopefully, some of them will go on to play club lacrosse or soccer or basketball. They are just a great group of kids – fun to coach and fun to be around. I’m really going to miss them next year.”
Senior captain Grace Sacchetti said: “It was so disappointing to have our season cancelled because I thought this year we would be really good. We had a week of practice, and we all clicked and worked really well together, which normally doesn’t happen at the beginning of the season. It was very promising.
“Thursday night was awesome. It was so nice. None of us thought they would do that for us. I totally forgot about Senior Night. It was so nice, and it was fun too because the seniors jumped in line with (the caravan). I’ve been playing with three or four the seniors since second grade. Some of the seniors are my really good friends and I see them outside of lacrosse, but some of them I would only see in lacrosse, and it was really fun to see everyone again. We’re all really good friends because of the sport.”
