AJ Tamburrino – U.S. Naval Academy (Wrestling)

Major:  Economics

Final list of colleges:  U.S. Naval Academy, Army West Point, University of Pennsylvania, Ohio State, Drexel

Reasons for choosing the Naval Academy:  “First of all, they have a great wrestling team, a great coaching staff. I really believe in what they’re trying to accomplish, and I get to serve my country in our nation’s best branch, in my opinion.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in wrestling at the collegiate level?  “When I started wrestling, I was five years old, and just going to all these big-time national tournaments, state tournaments. I knew I was ready for the highest level of competition in college.”

Coach Trent Mongillo says:  “AJ was third in the state last year (and fifth this year). He placed second at Escape the Rock this year, and he was a National High School champion as a freshman, a runner-up as a sophomore. He’s a two-time freestyle PA champ. He was a member of the PA National Team, the PA Greco National Team and competed in Tulsa, Okla. He’s a four-time Wetzel champion and is one of the top wrestlers in the country at 152 pounds. He’s a two-time captain and holds a career record of 126-14. That (90 percent) winning percentage is certainly one of the best at Hatboro-Horsham and statewide as well. He’s very controlling wrestler and is quite receptive to coaching as well.

“Despite all of his accolades, he’ll listen to all the nuance things and improve on the small parts that he needs to work on. He has an extremely high work ethic, and above all, he’s a great teammate. He always shows his teammates respect, whether they’re at his ability level or below. He works to not only make himself better daily, but it’s also rubbed off on his teammates as well. As a student, he holds an impressive 3.8 grade point average across a course load of honors and AP classes. Aside from wrestling, he’s been a member of the National Honor Society, LINK Crew and FBLA. I’ve been honored to coach him his senior season. I’m thankful for his service to our nation as a midshipman upon graduation, and I can’t thank him enough for all the positive impact he’s had with our program and with his teammates, and I want to wish him the best with all of his future endeavors, and I’d like thank his parents, Clara and Anthony, as well for bringing AJ to us.”
