Major: Psychology with a minor in Spanish
Final list of colleges: Mars Hill, Morgan State, Chestnut Hill, Sante Fe
Reasons for choosing Mars Hill: “It was either D1, which is Morgan State, or D2, which is Mars Hill. Coach (Christine) Roser – an All-American pitcher/catcher - told me that she wanted me, she could see me on the team, and she told me I would be one of the starters on the team as a freshman. I really liked the campus – it was more like a homey feel for me. I liked its size – not too big and not too small, and it has a small class size, which is something I was looking for.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in softball at the collegiate level? “I have been playing softball since I was four and travel since I was eight. When I was 14, I joined a harder travel softball team out of New Jersey – the New Jersey Intensity, and they introduced college softball to me. I was like – ‘Oh wow, I really want to do this in college,’ so that’s when the whole journey began.
“When I started playing for the EC Bullets, I realized there’s more to playing than just D1. I didn’t want to sit on the bench two or three years, which would happen at D1, before getting an opportunity to pitch.”
Coach Geoff Thompson says: “I was really looking forward to this year - with Kayla out there, a lot of teams wouldn’t score a lot of runs on us. She was one of our captains this year, and she was doing a great job of leading the team during winter workouts. We started practice, and she was doing a great job. The team was really coming together, and with Kayla and (co-captain) Ella Castronuovo, it was one of those things – if we had asked them to, they could have ran practice for us. They were that type of leaders. It was pretty awesome.
“Kayla was a four-year starter, and when she wasn’t pitching, we had her in there as a DP. She’s a good athlete, and she fielded her position. Honestly, not a lot of people could hit her. Her best pitch is her curveball. I would stand behind the backstop and watch that pitch break. She probably had a two-foot break on that, and it was a nice hard break too. I was really looking forward to the season. I thought we had a good team.”
