Abigail Schwartz – Millersville University (Softball)
Major: Chemistry/Secondary Education
Reasons for choosing Millersville: “I stepped on campus and I fell in love with it -it just felt like the right place for me. They are also an amazing teaching school.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in softball at the collegiate level? “I have known that I have wanted to play softball in college since I was a little kid. I started by attending a ton of camps at a lot of different schools and playing in college showcases. Once I toured Millersville and attended a camp there, I knew that it was the place for me. I went to every camp that they offered and wrote to the coaching staff a lot about my season and included videos of myself playing. Then in July of 2019 the head coach offered me a position on her team.”
Coach David Scott says: “Abby is basically what you would consider a coach’s dream. She’s always one of the hardest working kids on our team, always one of the loudest, most vocal leaders on our team. She’s very willing to have a discussion with the coach, which is a real positive thing because she always does it in a respectful manner. She is open to ideas and suggestions and making changes to her game. From that perspective, she has been a real pleasure to coach for the last couple of years, and I really wish I could have seen her play this year.
“Millersville is going to be getting a fantastic player, and that’s because Abby will outwork virtually anybody else on the field. She’s a unique player in that I sometimes have to tell her to not work so hard. She’ll show up at a practice barely able to walk, and I’ll say, ‘What happened?’ It was leg day at home, and she had worked out for two hours on her own already that day. As a college coach, Millersville is going to love to see that kind of stuff. From that perspective, Abby is very well positioned to have a really nice college career.
“A funny story about Abby is just her uniform. This thing looks like it was dragged through the mud, attacked by a dog and then thrown in a trash dumpster. The joke in the program is we can’t use her white uniform for her shadow box because it is just so beat up and destroyed, and that’s because Abby is always in the middle of things on the field. Whether it’s making a great diving defensive play, stealing a base, getting down and dirty – that’s what Abby does really well. Again, that’s a great quality for a player.
“As far as her future success, she’s going to do really, really well at Millersville. I think the work ethic her parents have instilled in her is phenomenal. I can’t wait for PSACs when they come back (to Quakertown) and I get to see her play. I hope I will get to see her play for four years (at Veterans Park). Abby, congratulations. Schwartz family, congratulations. This is a very big deal and a very big accomplishment. I’m personally very proud of you and I know the whole school and whole athletic department is very proud of you.”
