HATBORO-HORSHAM 3, PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 3 (25-18, 25-17, 27-25)

(Submitted by Hatboro-Horsham volleyball)

Hatboro-Horsham was tested and rounded out the first half of their season, notching a big win with a sweep against visiting Plymouth Whitemarsh bringing their record to 5-0.

Although the Hatters maintained a fairly consistent lead throughout all three sets in the match, the Hatters found themselves with a favorable 24-20 lead against PW in the third and deciding set. PW was mentally and physically tough as they worked their way back into the game to 24-24 and took the lead, 25-24. The Hatters were able to side-out and wrap up the match 27-25.

Setting the pace in defensive and serve receive were seniors Jess Howard and Jenna Robinson with 10 digs apiece. Both also added three aces on the line. Junior setter Grace Howard added seven digs with senior Sarah Lessig and junior Ava Santo contributing five digs each as well.

The offense was managed by junior setter Grace Howard with 26 assists as well as two aces. Senior setter Maddy Murphy returned to the court in limited action as a server with three aces. At the net, junior Nastya Tsetsko and Kayla Jones played huge roles with 15 and eight kills respectively. Junior Ava Santo added three kills with junior Izzy Bombas and Sophomore Jade Lauzier both bringing two kills out of the middle to the table.

"The score doesn't paint an accurate picture of the story,” HH coach Jon Young said. “HH vs PW is always a big game, and neither team disappointed. PW has an extremely talent-laden and deep bench of athletic players that will be extremely competitive for years to come. They were able to show extreme resiliency against some of the stronger attacks that HH brought to the table when in system, especially in the third set.

“We are starting to find rhythm with our offense, starting first and foremost in their passing and digging with big contributions in that area from seniors Jess Howard, Jenna Robinson and Sarah Lessig. Setter Grace Howard did a beautiful job at creating opportunities for the offense throughout the night. The offense took advantage of that with some huge swings at the net, making it very difficult for PW to stay in system.

“I'm extremely proud of this team and what we've been able to do thus far and especially tonight in how they presented themselves. Much like everyone right now, despite our student-athletes juggling everything from their virtual learning to protocols, they are finding a way to bring the right focus and effort to both our practices and matches every day and it's shown throughout the first half of the season.

“In times like these, it can be difficult to remember to enjoy the game we love, and I was very happy to see the kids have fun tonight while performing at a high level. Additionally, it was great to see one of our foundational players, senior setter Maddy Murphy, back on the court in limited action as she recovers from an early season injury setback. We look forward to continuing to refine our game, cultivating a competitive nature and performing in the second half of the season."
