District One Class 4A

First Round

(15) Upper Dublin 3, (2) Pennridge 2

This is what the postseason is all about—drama, action, momentum swings, and thrilling victories.

On Monday, it was 15th seed Upper Dublin that played the spoiler, pulling out a gutsy five-game victory over previously undefeated Pennridge, ending the season for the district’s second seed.

The Flying Cardinals took the first two games 25-22 and 25-13, then saw the Rams roar back and take the next two games 14-25 and 11-25. In the fifth and deciding set, Upper Dublin took a 15-10 victory to knock off host Pennridge.

Senior Alexa Jakubowitz finished with 7 kills, 1 assist, and 2 digs. Anna Faust recorded 22 digs and an assist, while Lauren Price picked up 32 assists and 3 digs. Charlotte Qi’s service game was critical as she ripped 7 aces to go along with 5 kills and 5 digs.

Emily Senior contributed 12 kills, 1 block, and 3 digs; Maggie Faust had 2 aces, 3 kills, and 13 digs; Sammy Silver fired off 4 aces and 5 digs; and Sophia Sabri had 7 kills and 1 block.

The Cardinals improve to 7-4 overall, and will face seventh seed West Chester Rustin in Thursday’s quarterfinal.

 

(3) Council Rock North 3, (14) Downingtown East 0

Third-seeded Council Rock North made quick work of 14th seed Downingtown East, rolling to a 25-14, 25-11, 25-11 straight-set win in Monday’s opening round of the District One Class 4A playoffs.

Junior outside hitter Ashleigh Adams led the attack with 14 kills to go along with 9 digs, 3 aces, 1 assist, and 2 blocks. Junior setter Kate Logan recorded 23 assists, 2 aces, 1 dig, and 1 block. Senior outside hitter Mary Baniewicz added 7 kills, 6 digs, 6 aces, and a block. Senior middle hitter Sabrina Pasemann had 6 kills and a pair of blocks, while fellow senior mid Julia Walton tallied 3 kills, 4 aces, 1 dig, and 1 block. Senior Libero Mikayla Adams had 6 digs, 1 assist, and an ace. Sophomore opposite hitter Ainsley Jordan recorded 6 digs and a kill. Junior middle hitter Bella Sloth drilled a pair of kills and junior setter Becca Wintjen dished out 3 assists.

The Indians improve to 12-0 overall and will look to extend their undefeated season on Thursday at 5 pm when they host the winner of Monday’s Central Bucks South/Perkiomen Valley matchup. 

 

(4) Hatboro-Horsham 3, (13) Pennsbury 0

Fourth-seeded Hatboro-Horsham earned a hard-fought straight-set 25-20 25-17, 27-25 over Pennsbury in Monday’s first-round game despite a substantial effort by Pennsbury's solid outside hitters.

The Hatters' offense was led by senior Maddy Murphy with 22 assists and an ace. At the net, juniors Grace Howard and Nastya Tsetsko had 10 and nine kills respectively. Sophomore Jade Lauzier added three kills and a block into the mix. The defense was anchored by senior libero Jess Howard with seven digs. Seniors Angie Ravi, Jenna Robinson, and Jess Howard all had a big night on the serving line with four aces and junior Grace Howard adding in three.

For the Falcons, senior Izzy Marinelli scored 16 kills and added 2 blocks, 2 aces, and 6 digs. Senior setter Carissa Van Veen notched 16 assists to go along with 3 kills, 1 block, 1 ace, and 4 digs. Janae Scott had 2 kills and 3 blocks, and Stephany Adamousky had 3 aces for Pennsbury, which closes the season at 6-5 overall.

The American Conference Champion Hatters improve to 11-0 overall and will host Thursday’s quarterfinal game against fifth seed Bishop Shanahan.  

 

(5) Bishop Shanahan 3, (13) Central Bucks East 0

Central Bucks East saw its season come to an end with a straight-sets 16-25, 15-25, 20-25 loss to fifth-seed Bishop Shanahan in the first round of the Division One Class 4A playoffs on Monday.

The Patriots end the season at 8-5 overall, and importantly to coach Kerri Rabberman, the loss does nothing to put a damper on an outstanding season.

“This game does not dictate our season,” Rabberman said. “This wasn't our best game, but our season was incredible. I am so proud of these girls and was privileged to coach them this season.

“Thank you to my seniors: Olivia Bennett, Kaylynn Bryan, Caroline Eldringhoff, Anna Huchko, Sophia Mettille, and Ava Napoletano. Thank you for everything that you have given this season and the past 4 years. I am so proud of each and every one of you and wish you nothing but all the luck and success in your future.”

Among the seniors, Eldringhoff recorded 1 kill, 1 block, and 3 digs. Mettille had 5 assists and 4 digs, Huchko tallied 3 kills, and Bryan finished with 4 kills and 7 digs.

In addition, Katie Monaghan dished off 9 assists to go along with 3 kills and 4 digs. Aimee Wolf had 2 kills, 2 blocks, and 2 digs. Chloe Mettille finished with 4 kills and 14 digs, Kat Montabana had 1 kill and 1 dig, and Taryn Zakrzewski recorded 7 digs and a kill.

 

(7) West Chester Rustin 3, (10) Council Rock South 1

Tenth-seeded Council Rock South fell 3-1 to seventh seed West Chester Rustin in Monday’s District One Class 4A first-round matchup.

Ava Paulson passed out 16 assists as well as 6 kills, 1 ace, and 4 digs. Alissa Helverson finished with 8 kills, 1 ace, and 12 assists, while Emma Helverson contributed 4 kills and a block. Avery Vaughan recorded 6 kills and 2 blocks, Kyleigh Bowman had 4 kills and 9 digs, Edan Kauer nailed 4 aces to go along with 6 kills and 8 digs, and Katie Rodman recorded 6 digs, 4 assists and an ace.

The Golden Hawks finish their season at 11-4 overall, and finished 9-3 for second place in the Continental Conference.
