Maddie Buechner – Bloomfield College (Softball)

Major:  Biology with a minor in Psychology

Reasons for choosing Bloomfield:  “Working with the coach made me really want to go there. I really liked him as a coach, and I think I’ll benefit a lot from him.

"I came about because my friend is going there, and she had mentioned me to him. My coach had talked to him about me, and then I met him at a camp. Then I went to one of the Bloomfield camps in September, and I verbally committed.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in softball at the collegiate level?  “I’ve always wanted to play in college when I started playing travel, so I have been on the journey and been thinking about schools. I never really knew where I wanted to go, but I really liked Bloomfield when I heard about it. I was thinking about it all summer – I was researching it. Then I met the coach at the end of summer and I went to the camp.”

Coach Dan Schram says: We have a very special senior class with BHS softball - four amazing young ladies who are the right leaders at the right time. There’s so much I could say about each of them and why they embody something so special.

“Maddie has a special place in my heart. Her older sister (Morgan), who is the field hockey coach, played on my first team as a freshman in 2011. Eventually, Morgan and Kaylie both focused on field hockey over softball. But from day one, it was understood that Maddie was the softball player. Fast forward to 2016, I met Maddie on the softball field at our summer camp. The smile, the grace, the swing, the potential - it was all there. It made me smile to think about what a beast player we had on the horizon in a couple of years. I was serving BP to her, watching her swing at about 75 percent. I challenged her and said something like, ‘If you hit one over, I’ll buy you Chick-fil-A.’ My thought process was - there is no way this seventh grader could hit the ball that far. If she does, it’ll be pretty cool. She swings the bat and it’s a long drive. It hits the yellow piping at the top of the fence. Being a jerk, I said, ‘Well, you were close.’ One of my varsity players then said to me, ‘Hey coach, our fence is set at college regulation because Holy Family University plays on it. It’s much further than a high school fence.’ Needless to say, I had to buy a lot of lunch that day.

“Fast forward, 2018, Maddie enters as a freshmen. Her first two years were as strong or stronger then any player I have ever seen in my years – she batted over .400 as a freshman and sophomore and had 59 hits as an underclassman and had no errors as a sophomore.

And the human being – she’s one of the coolest kids I have had in the field. No drama, lighthearted, and a beautiful person. She comes from a wonderful Bensalem family with tons of school history. It’s an honor to coach her.

“Finally, something she doesn’t know. It’s been hard for me to think of the future of BHS softball with so much time lost. It’s Maddie and the seniors that give me the strength to carry on. We’re gonna play for the people of Bensalem. We’re gonna give a reminder of what we had fought for prior to COVID and the possibility of what can happen when you believe.”
