Major:  Economics or Pre-law

Final list of colleges:  William & Mary, University of Southern California, Drexel, St. Joe’s, Penn

Reasons for selecting William & Mary:  “Not only does William and Mary have outstanding academics, but it felt like home right when I stepped on campus, and the atmosphere was unbeatable. The team and coaches are amazing and welcoming. I had an immediate connection with the school as soon as I stepped foot on the campus.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in lacrosse at the collegiate level?  “Originally, I planned on being a collegiate gymnast, but due to fear gymnastics was not the right sport for me, I began to play lacrosse, and it all happened really fast. When I joined Ultimate in seventh grade, most of the girls already knew that they wanted to play in college, and it was assumed that I wanted to. There was never a specific moment where I knew, but I loved the sport and wanted to continue to play, whether than meant in college or for a club.”

Coach Jamie Kane says:  “I have had the pleasure of coaching Sophia Chiodo Ortiz at Wissahickon High School. I first met Sophia as a fifth grade student at Shady Grove Elementary, and she did about eight back flips across the gym floor. Little did I know I would have her as a ninth grade stellar athlete starting on the lacrosse field for Wissahickon. Not only did she start, she was the third leading scorer as a freshman on a team with two senior captains that ended up playing lacrosse at the Division 1 and Division 2 level. She has earned all-league awards every year possible while playing for Wissahickon, so she’s been an impact player since the minute she got here.

“I have several favorite memories. One of my favorite memories is when Sophia hunted down one of the best players from the toughest competitor in our league, Upper Dublin, and she checked that player from behind before she was able to score against us. She did this by hunting the ball down from one end of the field to the other and just not giving up, sprinting after that player. That’s just what Sophia does. She does not give up, she is a fighter, and she is determined to be the best.

“I cannot wait to see Sophia on the field for William and Mary, and I can’t wait to hear about her success there both on the field and in the classroom. Sophia, best of luck to you.”
