Madison Silber – Wagner College (Softball)

Major: Pre-Medicine

Final list of colleges:  Wagner, Monmouth, Sienna, Yale, Princeton

Reasons for choosing Wagner:  “I chose Wagner because it offered me the perfect mix of Division 1 softball and great academics. The campus is gorgeous and in an ideal location for me.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in softball at the collegiate level?  “I began playing softball when I was three years old, and I have known I wanted to play Division 1 ball since I first joined a travel team in seventh grade. I’ve always wanted to play at the highest level that I can, so Wagner is the next step to that.”

Coach Wendy Iadonisi:  “She’s a four-year varsity player and has been catching for me for three years. She’s just a very intelligent player, and I think that’s one of her assets besides the strength of her arm and the power she has at the plate. She’s just a very smart catcher. She keeps her pitchers calm, she knows how to talk to them and manage them if they’re struggling or encourage them if they need encouragement. Her intelligence back there and her demeanor are definitely her strongest assets.

“She’s our number four hitter, and she has a very strong bat. She’s got a very strong arm, and especially with all the experience she brings - my two pitchers are sophomores, so it’s nice having that senior to help mentor them.”

Newtown Rock 18U coach Dave Myers says:  “Maddie is a spectacular player. When you think about her as a catcher – defensively, she’s phenomenal with her fundamentals, blocking, throwing. She’s a general on the field. Her voice is what sets her apart from other catchers. You can’t miss her when she’s on the field. She’s tremendous. Most catchers don’t have a bat like Maddie’s either. She hit eight or nine home runs in the fall, and she leads us in most of the power categories for our travel team, and she’s a tremendous kid too, so across the board, she’s a tremendous human being. Her parents should be very proud.”
