On Wednesday, May 19, 2021, Sophie Moyer was recognized for committing to continue her swimming career at Franklin & Marshall College.
Sophie Moyer – Franklin & Marshall College (Swimming)
Major: Government
Final list of colleges: Franklin & Marshall, Gettysburg, Providence
Reasons for choosing F&M: “It was meeting with the girls, meeting with the coach and seeing the team atmosphere when I visited.”
What was the progression that led you to swimming at the collegiate level? “I’ve been swimming since I was six years old, so I always knew I wanted to continue with it throughout my life. I reached a point in high school where I realized that I wanted to continue swimming, that I loved it. I injured my foot, and the sport I missed the most was swimming, so I realized I didn’t want to go without it.”
Coach Tom Kane says: “Sophie Moyer was an exceptional swimmer for East. She’s one of the fastest butterfliers in the school history. She was a joy to coach. I remember specifically a conversation I had with her going into ninth grade because she thought she was going to quit swimming and just focus on track. Between the efforts of her mother and my convincing, Sophie decided to swim, and the rest – as they say – is history. She became one of our top all-time swimmers.
“I can’t say enough about her. I’m so proud of the fact she’s going on to Franklin & Marshall and swimming four more years. She was a sprint freestyler, a great butterflier and got better every year. She was a mainstay of our relays. Without Sophie, they don’t qualify for districts each year. She’s a wonderful, wonderful girl. Her mother was an All-American for us at East in 1985 on the medley relay, which medalled at states, so the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Kris, her mother, also was my assistant coach for three years and then took over this past year when I was on sabbatical due to COVID. Sophie didn’t miss a beat. Kris helped coach her to the district championship and a league title in the 100 butterfly.”
