Upper Moreland Girls' Basketball Preview

UPPER MORELAND GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEW

Coach: Matt Carroll, 6th year at Upper Moreland

Assistant coaches: Pete Williams, Kyle Blacken

Last year’s record: 13-5 (9-1 in league)

Notable losses: Kaiya Herb (2nd team All-League), Kathryn Morrow, Kaitie Opferman

Key returners: Kiera Coyle (12/G, returning starter), Emma Hurley (12/F, returning starter), EmmyFaith Wood (11/G, 1st team All-League), Holly Gohl (10/F, 1st team All-League)

Others to watch: “We have more talent this year than any year I’ve been here. From our seniors down to our freshmen, we probably have 12 players who could get meaningful minutes for us. With 4 returning starters it’ll be interesting to see who earns that 5th spot and who rounds out the everyday varsity roster. It’ll be a very intense competition.”

Strengths/Question Marks: “Our depth is both our strength and our question mark. We have a lot of players who can contribute at the varsity level but who and when is the question. This can become an issue because not everyone will get the same opportunity every day, and the season can become quite a roller coaster. Some players may play against some teams and then not against others. Not settling, becoming content, or becoming disinterested will be an everyday discussion as we move through our season. I am excited to see who steps into the bigger varsity roles as the season progresses.”

Outlook: “We were very successful last year when it comes to accomplishments. We shared the league title with New-Hope Solebury, and we hosted and won our first playoff game in over a decade. At the end of the day, we knew we didn’t get to the overall level of basketball we wanted. Our goals for this year are very similar to last year, but we are ready to compete with every team we face and know that we have a chance to win every game. Last year gave us some confidence and we worked really REALLY hard this offseason. Competing with the best is a different mindset for this program but we think we are ready for the challenge.”
