North Penn's Detweiler & Waldspurger Commit to Play Collegiate Field Hockey

On Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021, North Penn seniors Bay Detweiler and Maddie Waldspurger were recognized for committing to play collegiate softball.

Bay Detweiler – East Stroudsburg University (Field Hockey)

Major: Exercise Science

Final list of colleges:  East Stroudsburg, Ursinus, West Chester

Reasons for choosing ESU: “I chose ESU because of their field hockey program. The coaches and team felt familiar – similar to what I know and love here at North Penn, and I’m very excited to continue playing and pursuing my academic goals.”

Coach Shannon McCracken says: “Bay was a three-year letter winner for the field hockey team, and she was a captain her senior year. She was all-league honorable mention junior year and second team senior year. She had 10 career goals and 11 assists. Bay just improved tremendously over these four years. She’s a kid that improved because of her work ethic and her love for the game. She’s very coachable, she has a great attitude, and her personality is top notch. She’s so positive. If every coach had more Bays on their team, they would love to go to practice and games just as much as I do. Her fitness is top notch which moved her from the forward position to the midfield position because her endurance was great. She’s a leader by example. She’s not the most vocal kid on the field, but she is such a hard worker on the field that her teammates follow her. At practice, she was my drill demonstrator because she paid attention to the details, and those basic skills really made a huge difference in her play the last four years. She is going to be attending East Stroudsburg University, which advanced to the NCAA semifinals, so I think East Stroudsburg is going to be a great fit for her.”

Madison Waldspurger – St. Francis University (Field Hockey)

Major: Exercise Physiology

Final list of colleges:  St. Francis, Fairfield, Monmouth, Lock Haven, East Stroudsburg, Shippensburg

Reasons for choosing St. Francis: “I chose St. Francis because of how personable the coach was and the coaching staff and also because it’s a beautiful campus and the academic programs.”

Coach Shannon McCracken says: “Maddie was a four-year starter for the field hockey, and she was a captain her senior year. She was all-league second team her freshman year and then first team sophomore, junior and senior year. She was all-state first team her junior and we expect big things for her senior year. She was MVP her junior year. Maddie had 18 career goals and 15 assists. This is my 10th year as head coach here at North Penn, and she is by far one of the best players to wear a North Penn field hockey jersey. She is a dedicated player, she’s a hard worker. I met Maddie when she was in elementary school. She was a regular attendee of our North Penn field hockey camp, and she just grew tremendously, and I can’t believe we’re here and now she’s on her signing day after attending camp for so many years as a little kid. She is the type of athlete you hear about – no days off. She loves the game, she plays it all the time. Her mom is a coach at Dock, and she’s constantly coaching little kids in the next generation because she loves the game so much. She goes hard at practice. She’s not a vocal leader, but she leads by example.  Maddie and Bay were my drill demonstrators this year because they pay attention to the details, they go 100 percent, and they show the younger players how it should be done. She’s extremely reliable and dedicated to the game and her teammates. I’m excited to see what she does at St. Francis. I think she’s going to walk in and make an immediate impact on the team, so congratulations, Maddie.”
