Was it a crazy week, or is this the new normal? Quakertown pins down Council Rock South (33-31) for the second time in three years, Central Bucks East takes down defending District One team champion Spring-Ford, and the Golden Hawks rebound with a stellar second place finish at the King of the Mountain. Some things just remain the same.
Whatever the 2021-22 wrestling seasons brings from here on in, it can only be more excitement and success for SOL teams. Although CB East downed a somewhat depleted Spring-Ford team 37-26, it was nonetheless a great victory for the Patriots, who will not be sneaking up on anyone the rest of the way. Especially, after their second-place finish at the Carlisle Invitational. The Patriots crowned a champ in big man Quinn Collins (215) and added two runners up with Joseph Mignon (152) & Mason Stein (160) in the 24-team event.
East won six of the nine contested bouts against Spring-Ford, while the teams traded forfeits twice. Mason Stein started it off with a major decision (11-3) over Anthony Attilio at 160 pounds and Joseph Mignon downed experienced Ryan Lepore 7-2 at 152 to close out the Rams. Andrew Oram’s pin at 132 started the comeback for the Patriots as they ran off four straight victories with Luke Wilson’s 12-10 decision at 138 pushing East ahead 28-26. Tyler Tanner actually put it away (34-26) with his decking of S-F’s Matt Offner at 145 with just one second left in the second period. The Patriots will be a force to reckon with in the SOL Colonial Division with improved Pennridge and Souderton teams to go along with the always tough North Penn Knights.
CB East added a bronze at Carlisle with Nils Updale at 172-pounds, and two fifth place finishers with Andrew Oram & Joe Collins at 132 & 285 respectively. The Patriots placed 10 individuals overall and look to have a solid dual and individual squad ready to embrace the new year. East departs the Wetzel Classic after many years of participation this year, to head to Jersey for the Sam Cali Invitational over the holiday season.

Rewind to the Covid year of 2020 when Quakertown was the first SOL team to down Council Rock South in a minute. In what we hope is at least a post-Covid season here in 2021-22, the Panthers do it again in style. Q-town used plenty of bonus points as Frederick Retter pinned down South’s Charles Socki in just 52 seconds to cap a stellar comeback performance. The Panthers netted bonus points in all six bouts they won, with four falls. Despite losing seven of the 13-contested bouts, in which the Golden Hawks left some bonus points on the mat, the Panthers sent a message that they too will be looking to contend for a team championship in March.
Both coaches knew this would be a great test for all involved, and they surely will meet again down the road, and possibly with a D1 Team Championship on the line. Quakertown boss, Coach Handel, held off opening weekend to rest his football players, and it paid off during the Panthers first competition of the season. Both teams are loaded with young talent and old crafty veterans, who will all be in the mix for individual accolades in the post-season. You’ll see how many when the first edition of the SOL rankings come out.

Council Rock South remains solid as a rock with individual performances at the King of the Mountain tourney hosted by Central Mountain. Senior Matt Colajezzi left Mill Hall, PA, as the King of the Mountain at 160-pounds with his championship victory over Mifflin County’s Kyler Everly. Four Golden Hawks placed fourth overall in their weight classes: Bekhruz Sadriddinov (152), Anthony Cerulli (172), Lucas Doyle (215) and Charles Socki (285). Additional medalists included two fifth placers in Luke Reitter (113) and Shermuhammad Sadriddinov (145) and sixth placer Connor Lenahan at 106.
The Golden Hawks, despite dropping the dual to Quakertown, have opened up the season with back-to-back second place finishes in major scholastic events here in Pennsylvania. Oh, and they quietly dismantled Owen J Roberts 61-8 in the past two weeks.
