Darrien Furiness – Ohio State University (Lacrosse)

Major: Undecided

Final list of colleges:  Ohio State, Northwestern, Michigan, Boston University, Drexel

Reasons for choosing Ohio State: “I just knew that I wanted to go to a big school, and having a chance to be able to play in the Big Ten was something that I’ve always dreamed of. The atmosphere and the school spirit is unmatched.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in lacrosse at the collegiate level?  “I’ve always been a dual sport athlete. I played soccer and lacrosse pretty much my whole life. Soccer was my first sport, but my love for lacrosse really grew as I got older. By my freshman year of high school, I decided I wanted to play lacrosse in college rather than soccer or both sports.”

Coach Shannon MacPherson says: “Darrien also has developed in the last four years. I’m super proud of her. She has such leadership on the field. She puts in so much effort, and she’s just dedicated. You can see she truly cares about the program, she truly cares about our success as a team. She’s a very composed player, so she’s very calm, but yet she’s a force on the field. I would not want to get in Darrien’s way when she’s driving to goal, and also as an attacker, I wouldn’t want Darrien defending me. She’s a midfielder, but she has a presence on defense and attack. She’s a voice on defense, and on attack, she will drive to goal. Sometimes when you think there’s no way she’s going to score, she pulls a move and is able to go to goal.  She’s very good at getting possession of the draw control, she’s very aggressive. She’s a dynamic player, she’s quick, and she’s incredibly coachable. I’ve really enjoyed coaching her the past four years, and I’m really proud of her accomplishments.

“Darrien will be playing at Ohio State next year. We’re going to miss her, especially her leadership. I know she’ll be successful at Ohio State. I’m looking forward to seeing the season with her.”

Maggie Golder – Penn State University (Lacrosse)

Major: Undecided

Final list of colleges:  Penn State, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, Brown, Cornell, Rutgers

Reasons for choosing Penn State: “I come from a huge Penn State family – big school, Big 10. A lot of school spirit was a big (reason). The team’s awesome, I love the coach, and the family atmosphere is really awesome.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in lacrosse at the collegiate level?  “I started playing in kindergarten. I picked it up super easy, and my family was super supportive through it, and meeting and looking up to all these girls (before me) and just knowing I want to do that when I grow up.”

Coach Shannon MacPherson says: “Maggie has been on the team for four years and has grown so much in her years with the program. She’s developed into such a leader. The girls respect her, they look up to her. She’s constantly improving to get better. She’s probably one of the most skilled athletes I’ve ever coached, but she never settles. She’s always working to improve herself and to also improve her teammates.

“One of her biggest accomplishments is she was selected this year as a member of the U-18 U.S. National Development Team. I could not be more proud of her for gaining that accomplishment. It just really shows full circle Maggie as a player, and she truly deserves that honor. Anyone who has seen her play – she just has such a love for the game, and it’s fun to watch her play. She’s a smart player, she’s been key in our draw controls. A lot of the time she’s taking the draws, so she might not always get the credit for winning the draw controls, but she’s key in placing that draw where it needs to go.

“Next year she’ll be playing at Penn State, and we’re going to hugely miss her presence. They’re so lucky to have her talent, but I can’t wait to watch her play at Penn State and also see what her senior year holds with us. As far as the two of them, both of them were first team all-league selections this year, and I just can’t wait to see the two of them play each other in the Big Ten next year.”
