Carter Fitzgerald – Penn State University (Track & Field/Cross Country)

Major: Economics

Final list of colleges:  Penn State, South Carolina, Pitt, Connecticut

Reasons for choosing Penn State: “The coaching staff was just (right) for me, the campus life, the football life – just the culture there is awesome.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in track at the collegiate level?  “My junior year was really my breakout year for me. Before that, I was on state relays, but last year, I really took it to an extreme and really took it upon my individual self to PR every race, and it was really great.”

Coach John Mahoney says: “Carter is going on to Penn State University to run track and cross country, which I’m especially proud of as I’m also a track and field and cross country alum from Penn State, and he’s going to be coached by a CB West alum at Penn State (John Gundak), so it’s a very unique experience for him, and I’m really excited and happy for him. Carter is a phenomenal athlete. He really has taken on a leadership role this year. He used the pandemic not as an excuse but as a reason to get better on his own, and it truly showed last year that he did everything he could to take advantage of the time off and the additional time to do everything he could to get better as an athlete. He’s a phenomenal leader and was the anchor on both of our bronze medal state championship 4x8 and 4x4 relays last year. We have a lot of guys coming back from those relays, so they’re going to be looking towards him in that leadership position to maybe bring home some state titles before the end of this school year.”
