On Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021, CB West senior Cole Fehrman, Aidan Quinn and Aiden Kim were recognized for committing to continue their baseball careers at the collegiate level.
Cole Fehrman – West Virginia University (Baseball)
Major: Undecided
Final list of colleges: West Virginia, Pitt, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Elon
Reasons for choosing West Virginia: “They were the easiest in the recruiting process – they made everything easy. All the coaches were nice. I went on campus and walked around myself before I made my decision because at the time I was too young to go on an official visit and talk to coaches. It was during COVID, and when I stepped on campus, I just loved it.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “I always knew I wanted to play in college. I never knew I would be able to play at the level I’m going to play at until schools started reaching out, and it just blew up from there.”
Coach Brian Weaver says: “Cole’s demeanor absolutely belies who he is as an athlete. He’s really laidback, he’s really soft-spoken, and then he comes out, and he’s an absolute frightening pitcher to hit against. He’s a kid who has been on the radar for a while. His older brother is a Division 1 athlete – he runs track, and so Cole is completely unfazed by his talent and the spectacle of the whole recruiting process. He was very collected through all that. He’s very methodical in his preparation, and his demeanor never gets too up or too down regardless of the situation. He’s been somebody who – in the pandemic year – we were really counting on as a sophomore to surprise some people. Last year, we really needed him to step up, and he did in a big way. This year I wasn’t sure given his demeanor and being a little more laidback if he was the kind of senior who leads by example or if he would be out front leading in a vocal role. He’s ended up doing both. Every practice he’s at, the dynamic is different. The energy is better, and the sense of stay loose, work hard is better. You put eight guys on the field behind that, they’ll run through the wall for him.”
About Cole:
Favorite food: Chicken Wings
Favorite TV show: Breaking Bad
Favorite music: Country
Aiden Kim – Johns Hopkins University (Baseball)
Major: Something in STEM
Reasons for choosing Johns Hopkins: “They have good academics, they’re close to family, and they also have a good baseball program, which I enjoyed.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “I’ve been playing ever since I can remember. I started taking it more seriously in high school, and I worked really hard during the offseason, and schools just came to me.”
Coach Brian Weaver says: “Any time you hear about a kid going to a school like Johns Hopkins for a sport, you instantly default to ‘but do they have the grades?’ The answer is ‘heck, yes.’ He’s incredibly bright. In our program, I make reference to him a lot as a guy who has just worked himself into the position he’s in. Hopkins is number five in the preseason poll this year, and you don’t get recruited by them unless you’re the real deal. Aiden’s the kind of guy who is an ‘X’ factor. He has the potential to rip a ball for power, he has the potential to hit to the opposite field when he’s really locked in. On the mound, he has a really heavy fastball that gets on you real fast. None of that happens by accident. He’s worked incredibly hard in the gym, privately and with us. There’s not a day he’s with us that he’s not locked in. We’re still trying to build ourselves a culture here. This is only year four for me, and a guy like that is so important for my freshmen to see to get an impression – ‘If I want to wear black and gold, I’ve got to match that guy’s intensity. I need to match what that guy does for the team.’”
About Aiden:
Favorite food: Steak
Favorite movie: The Sandlot
Favorite music: Rap
Aidan Quinn – Coastal Carolina University (Baseball)
Major: Sports Management or Finance
Final list of colleges: Coastal Carolina, Villanova, Penn State, Radford, James Madison
Reasons for choosing Coastal Carolina: “The academic fit was right, I feel like the competition is right, and the area itself – I just really liked it there when I visited, and I just saw myself there. That’s why I picked it.”
What was the progression that led you to competing in baseball at the collegiate level? “I always felt like I could compete at college when I was younger, and my game just kept progressing as I got older. I found myself talking to a bunch of colleges by the time I was 16-17, and I knew I was going to play in college at that point.”
Coach Brian Weaver says: “He’s a guy when he was younger – everyone was saying, ‘Wait until you see Aidan Quinn.’ It’s always really fascinating when you have somebody who matches the hype. He’s a tremendous hitter. His defense has become rock solid. He also thinks really well about the game and about situational things, so his IQ in the game has really grown with his talent and with his size. One of the reasons he was a captain as a junior – his teammates picked him – is he’s a fun guy, and he can laugh and he can be goofy, but when it’s time to throw the switch and be serious, nobody does it like him.”
