Golden Hawks Avenge Early Season Loss to Quakertown

By Glenn Kaiser

Ft. Washington, PA - CR South head coach Brad Silimperi knew he had to make some changes and mix things up a bit against Quakertown in the finals of the D1 Team Championships, and that’s what he did.  Nonetheless, he credited his wrestlers for the execution of the plan, as the Golden Hawks downed the Panthers 36-19 at Upper Dublin H.S. Saturday afternoon.  Both Silimperi and Quakertown head coach Kurt Handel knew back in December that things would look different if they met later in the postseason, and they were right.

With the match starting in the upper weights at 172-pounds, where Q-town captured the first dual with CRS 33-31 with three of four victories in those weight classes, each team knew momentum and points would be crucial and at a premium.  This time around in the D1 Team Championship finals, it was South winning three of the four.  Golden Hawk stud Matt Colajezzi bumped up to 172 from his usual spot at 160-pounds and defeated the Panthers Calvin Lachman 11-4, just missing out on a major decision as Lachman scored at the buzzer to end the match.  But this time leaving points on the mat did not hurt South, as Tom Woloshyn returned to the mat for the first time this season after suffering a serious injury during the football season.  And his return was spectacular, as he took out rugged Panther Kaden Roesener in deciding fashion 11-6 to ignite the Golden Hawks’ bench.

Lucas Doyle followed with a pin for the Golden Hawks at 215, as he also moved up, and CRS was off and running with a 12-0 lead.  The wrestling was at a very high level thru-out the dual, and Ben Brillhart exemplified that with his 5-2 win over Q-town’s Todd McGann to slow the Panthers down in the middle of the contest, making the score 21-12 in favor of South.  And with the Sadriddinov brothers and Anthony Cerulli yet to grapple, the victory for CRS was imminent.  South’s Mo Sadriddinov dispatched tough Zach Borzio 5-love and lil brother Bek decked Maxwell Hibsman in the first period, leaving no doubt that CRS was back on top and the kings of D1.  Cerulli put the icing on the cake with a fall in 32-seconds to make the final score a convincing 36-19 win.

CR South had missed out on the last two final contests of these duals in 2020 and 2021 after winning three straight titles from 2017 to 2019.  They also appeared in the finals two straight years prior to their three-peat.  Quakertown returned to the finals after their 2020 loss to Spring-Ford.  The all-SOL final showcased the league’s best teams, and with Pennridge and CB East advancing deep in the tourney exemplified the toughness of the SOL in these team championships.

CB East remained an anomaly this season, as they continued to win while forfeiting two weight classes.  They defeated the SOL’s Pennsbuy 38-24 in the first round of wrestle-backs after dropping a 43-21 loss at the hands of West Chester Henderson.  East then had their rematch with Spring-Ford, which East won 37-26 to open their season, in the consolation semifinals.  S-F edged the Patriots by one-point 31-30 ending their hopes to advance to the PIAA Team Championship.  The Patriots built a 24-0 lead after Max Stein decked Drew Dotterer (S-F) in just 29-seconds to open the match at 160-pounds.  Quinn Collins (189) & Reagan McCullough (215) recorded back-to-back falls, along with decisions by Nils Updale (172) and Joe Collins (285) before East had to gift the Rams 12-points with forfeits at both 106 and 113, halfing the score at 24-12 in the dual.  S-F ran-off five straight victories after the forfeits, securing the win despite Tyler Tanner’s fall to end the match at 152 making the final score 31-30.

It was truly an incredible run for the Patriots (12-6), and to miss out on a trip to the PIAA Team Championship had to hurt with the one-point loss.  But the East grapplers and head coach Dave Scarpill have surely enjoyed the ride this season, and with outstanding individual talent, they should enjoy the trip later to Hershey in March for the 2022 Individual PIAA (3A) Wrestling Championships.

Pennridge also was a tough out in these duals as they had to battle Spring-Ford and West Chester Henderson to advance.  Both S-F and WCH advanced to the PIAA Team Championship finishing third and fourth respectively with S-F’s narrow 30-29 win in the consi-finals.  Pennridge beat Garnet Valley 40-34 in the first round of consolations, after getting beat by S-F 44-21 in the quarters.  Pennridge could not get it going against WCH as they were overmatched, losing 43-13.  Nonetheless, the Rams garnered great experience in these duals with a very young team full of sophomores, and will be a team to reckon over the next couple of years.

Shout out and thanks to the Upper Dublin Wrestling Family for hosting the finals once again, they always provide a great atmosphere for the teams and fans.
