#3 COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 5, #14 ABINGTON 1

The Ghosts – thanks to a power play goal by Griffin Carpenter with a Joe Stelacio assist – took a 1-0 lead 10:47 into the opening quarter. They still led by that 1-0 score heading into the third period in Tuesday’s opening round game at Hatfield Ice.

Playing no small role in the Ghosts’ upset bid was goalie Ben Panella, who turned away all 32 shots the Golden Hawks sent his way in the first two periods. To put Panella’s performance in perspective, consider only that the Hawks held a 32-11 advantage in shots heading into the final period, but they trailed 1-0.

The Golden Hawks won the game with a five-goal outburst in the third period. Chase Tovsky scored the equalizer 3:20 into the period, using assists from Blaize Pepe and Kevin Koles. Just over a minute later, Samuel Cherkassky (Julian Sarne/Kyle Boss assists) scored the go-ahead goal that turned out to be the game-winner. David Vergules added an insurance goal 6:56 into the period, using assists from Kevin Koles and Matthew Constantini. A pair of goals late in the period by Chase Tovsky (Daniel Filippov assist) and Julian Wagenmann (Vergules/Boss assists) gave the Golden Hawks their final margin of victory.

Carson Lopez notched the win in goal for the Golden Hawks, turning away 13 of 14 shots to earn the win.

#10 NESHAMINY 6, #7 CONESTOGA 5 (2 OT)

Max Gallagher had himself a night for Neshaminy.

Gallagher scored the game-winner five minutes into sudden death overtime, propelling the Redskins to a dramatic upset of Conestoga. It was Gallagher’s fourth goal of a dazzling offensive effort, and the drama in this one began long before overtime as Neshaminy needed a pair of late goals in regulation to even send the game in overtime.

Neshaminy trailed Conestoga 5-3 with time winding down in regulation when Gallagher went to work, finding the net 14:42 into the final period with a Daniel McColgan assist to make it a one-goal game. With seven seconds remaining in regulation, Gallagher scored an unassisted goal to knot the score, setting the stage for overtime where Gallagher once stole the spotlight.

Early on, Conestoga took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Charlie Spottiswood seven minutes into the game. Less than a minute later, Noah Seewagen evened the score, using a JJ Hathaway assist. Andrew Pisano’s goal late in the period put Conestoga on top 2-1 after one period.

Six minutes into the second period, Gallagher scored with a Michael Knipple assist to even the score, but Pisano and AJ Carroll answered with back-to-back goals to go on top 4-2. A goal by Daniel McColgan in the closing seconds pulled Neshaminy to within one heading into the final period. Pisano’s third goal just over four minutes into the third period made it a 5-3 game, setting the stage for Gallagher’s late-game heroics.

Neshaminy held a 50-43 advantage in shot, although Conestoga held a 13-9 edge in the two overtime periods.

Brian Nelson notched the win in goal, stopping 38 of 43 shots he faced.

#5 AVON GROVE 2, #12 CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 1

Defense was the name of the game in this one. The two teams combined for 66 shots with Avon Grove accounting for 40 of those. Keeping the Patriots in the game until the final horn was goalie Matt Mangiacapre, who turned away 38 of 40 shots he faced.

Phil McIntyre put the Patriots on the board 3:37 into the game, using a pass from Stephen DiRugeris. Five minutes later, Avon Grove evened the score with a goal from Jordan Fabian (Nathan Crossan assist).

Avon Grove took a 2-1 lead 5:37 into the second period when Brendan Chandler found the net with a Will Gorman assist. Neither team scored the rest of the way despite generating plenty of opportunities. Mangiacapre turned away all 16 shots he faced in the final period, but unfortunately for the Patriots, Avon Grove’s Justin Mackley was perfect as well, turning away all 10 of East’s third period shots. Mackley stopped 25 of 26 shots he faced in a standout effort in goal.
