Abington Boys' Volleyball Preview

ABINGTON BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL PREVIEW

Coach:  Christine Steinmetz, 3 years

Assistant coaches: Jason Barshinger and Maddie Robinson

Last year’s record:  10-8 overall, lost in first round of districts at Bensalem

Notable losses:  Jaun Perez and Mario Colavita

Key returners:  Taulant Kurt; senior, setter.  Danny Gonzalez; senior outside hitter.  Sean Dougherty; junior, libero.

Others to watch:  Sebastian Skenderi; junior, middle hitter.  Sam Miller; junior, right side/middle hitter.

Strengths/Question Marks:  “This preseason we worked a lot on becoming a defensive-minded team and learning to outlast our opponents and put other teams in difficult or chaotic situations.  Our serving and blocking have come a long way to help create consistency and a strong defensive front. We have a strong senior setter, but are still working on timing of running some of our sets with younger hitters.”

Outlook:  “This year the team set their goals very high, and the coaching staff thinks they are more than capable of reaching them.  The most important goals were focused on working together and create an intense level at practice that will translate to games.  Before leaving school we had one scrimmage, where they set goals for themselves and reached them.  I think that is a great start to reaching their team goals of hosting a playoff game, winning a playoff game and finishing the season with 12 wins.  We will need the hard work and effort of everyone one the team, but their goals are attainable.”
