Strengths/Question Marks: The strength of this team is in its experience. We had a lineup filled with players getting their first taste of varsity baseball last year, after losing a 2020 season to the shutdown. Most players committed to the weight room in the offseason and saw drastic transformations. They are a group that is extremely committed as individuals to get better. The hope is that this individual drive will be funneled into the goal of team success. If they can remain even keeled while competing through the adversity that comes from high caliber opponents, challenging spring weather conditions and the stresses of a failure driven sport, they will have a great season.
Outlook: “A young team last year that started six underclassmen, including three freshmen, in playoffs got a taste of high-quality baseball played in our conference and across District 1. They are hungry to improve on last season. Over 70 percent of last year’s innings pitched return this year. The innings this season will be led by experienced players including senior RHP Aidan Weaver (Duke), Sr RHP Max McGrady (Holy Cross), senior RHP Tyler Behm (Thomas Jefferson), junior LHP Xavier Sjostedt and senior RHP/OF Brett Young. Newcomers sophomore Sam Bliss, junior Jackson Wojnicki and junior Gabe Amendola will round out the bullpen.
“Sophomore Reece Moody will anchor the infield from the shortstop position after graining valuable experience last year starting as a freshman for most of the season. The outfield will be roamed by Brett Young and Jack Mislan, who played those positions most of last season. The remaining outfield spot, vacated by graduating four-year starter Jack Nugent, is up for grabs between some talented players including senior Tony DeMichael, senior Nick Caputo and junior Matthew Rowland.
“The graduation of three-year starter Andrew Whinney (Holy Cross) will be filled by senior Nick Carter who played exceptionally well filling in last season during Andrew’s injury, recording time in 15 games.”
