CHELTENHAM GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEW
Coach: Bob Schaefer (30th year) 707 wins & 154 losses.
Last year’s record: 13-1 SOL American Conference champions, 27-3 overall, District One runner-up, advanced to the Elite Eight in the state where the Lady Panthers lost to Central Dauphin.
Notable losses: Shayla Felder, 2nd Team All State, Monet Constant, Kira Ogden, Liz Taliaferro, Lorraine Oliver
Key returners: Tiffany Johnson (Sr., 5-4, Guard), Austen Hamler (Sr., 5-9, Forward), Artavia Sheffield (Sr., 5-3, Guard), Ciara Andrews (Jr., 5-9, Guard), Christina Coleman (Jr., 5-10, Forward)
Others to watch: Asia Dan (Sr., 5-5, Guard), Samira Gray (Sr., 5-11, Forward), Jiana Clark (Jr., 5-10, Forward), Shayla Peoples (Jr., 5-3, Guard), Ming Seawright (Jr., 6-0, Forward)
Strengths: “They want to learn and do well. They will have good speed on defense and should be a good transition team.”
Question marks: “Skill levels are lower than usual. Many of our players have limited experience. With the loss of last years’ seniors, we will have to find some scorers and make up 35 to 40 points per game.”
Outlook for the season: “Having lost all-state point guard Shayla Felder and other talented seniors, the Lady Panthers are looking for point scorers. Hopefully, the younger, less experienced players have grown up throughout the spring, summer and fall leagues and workouts. So far, in practice the girls seem positive, excited, motivated and confident. Each player wants to contribute in any way they can. The team is working hard to prepare for what should be a challenging and exciting season.”
