UPPER MORELAND SOFTBALL PREVIEW
Coach: Melanie Martino 3rd year at UMHS
Asst coaches: Tina Buccini and Kelly Santry Witkowsky.
Notable losses: We are missing two players this year for injuries: Makenzie Leo who likely would have played a role for us this year and center fielder Ava Bailey SOL first team OF last year.
Key returning players: Junior pitcher Eowyn Stainback is the anchor of our pitching staff. Our seniors Devyn Kniese (3B) who was so solid on the field and led UM’s offense along with Natalie Walton (1B). Natalie is arguably the best defensive high school first baseman I have coached or coached against.
Elizabeth Santry (SS) anchors our infield at short with her leadership as a two-year captain and is a player we can count on at the plate as well. Ryan Ricchini, another senior, is a great player to have in the lineup. You can put her at second or anywhere in the outfield, and she will get the job done. Alyssa Wiley (CF) has come back strong after a very serious injury, and she isn't missing a step. She covers so much ground and has a calming effect on the outfielders as a true leader out there. Zoe Longstreth (OF/2B) is returning to the team strong with a great energy and an aggressive way of playing. Returning catcher Haleigh Woodman is a warrior back there. She helps control the game with her leadership, pitch calls, and she is like a wall behind the plate. She and all of these seniors will leave a huge hole on this team. I have watched these particular seniors play since they were very young, and to see the players and young adults they have grown into us truly my honor.
Other players to watch: Kaylee Brown she will be playing several positions for us this year which she does all very well. Stephanie Jones and Jocelyn McCellan these three will be playing a key role in our lineup this year. Also, newcomer sophomore pitcher Kelly Bates.
Outlook: “We have a full squad of returning players with some newcomers added to the roster that will definitely be contributing and making a difference this year for sure. Having almost a full roster of returning players is definitely in our favor, and I'm looking forward to watching them excel. The team culture is very positive this year, and the girls are feeling the energy and it shows in their play. The crossover schedule is always a challenge for us in the past, but with this team this year, I am very optimistic.
“Our team’s goals this year are to be better than last year, play cohesively as a team, and keep our positive team culture strong throughout the season. As coaches, we hope this very special group of seniors finish on top of their game.”
