Facing their 4th league game in 4 days, the Hats turned to freshman Jimmy Tooley to get the start on the mound. Making his first ever varsity start, Tooley held the Trojans scoreless over 4 1/3 innings pitched allowing just one hit, while walking 7, and striking out 1. Despite the walks, Tooley’s mound presence, poise, and ability to work out of jams was more than the Hatters could have hoped for; he gave them the chance to win, which was all that was hoped for.
The Hatters scored first in the bottom of the 4th inning. Sophomore SS Jake Bianchini led off the inning with a single and junior 2B Josh Heebner followed with another single. Junior pinch hitter AJ Vegas laid down a sacrifice bunt that advanced the runners to 1st and 3rd. Bianchini raced home on a wild pitch to give the Hatters a 1-0 lead and Heebner moved up to third on the same pitch. Senior RF Shane Carpenter then scored Heebner with a single off of the shortstops glove to extend the lead to 2-0.
Tooley made that lead last into the 5th inning. With 1 out in the 5th inning and men on first and second, senior Matt Brown relieved Tooley on the mound. Brown got out of the inning with two fly outs to the outfield to keep the score at 2-0.
Four hits, three walks, and an error led to 5 Trojan runs in the top of the 6th inning.
Junior Quinn Rovner was impressive on the mound for the Trojans earning the complete game win on just 83 pitches. He allowed 8 hits, while striking out 7 and walking none.
The Hatters (2-4 overall, 2-2 SOL American), will travel to CB East for their fifth game in five days on Friday. Senior Kevin Fleischut, who threw a scoreless 7th inning against Wissahickon, will get the start for the Hatters.
