In Scotland, a small stream that runs through many holes is called a burn.
These pesky, well-placed little hazards often wreak havoc upon errant shots
-- or even well-played ones. Perhaps the most famous blunder involving a
burn came in 1999 when Frenchman Jean Van de Velde hit his approach shot on
the 18th hole of Carnoustie into the Barry Burn, thus beginning a series of
unfortunate (but certainly memorable) events that would lead to him losing
The Open Championship. Today, the Ghosts played par 33 John F. Byrne Golf
Course in Philadelphia against Truman, but rather than be bludgeoned by by
the burn that ran through the arid, turf-challenged course, the Ghosts
posted their best team effort of the season, defeating their opponents by a
score of 181-224. Seniors Ben Cooley (33) and Rich Thorpe (35) have learned
to feed off one another, and this synergy will be valuable as the team gets
to the meat of their season in the coming weeks. Junior Brandon Caine (37),
along with sophmores Jake Shur (38) and Nick Coyle (38) used their mashies,
spoons, and niblicks to post strong numbers. And even though junior Kris
Carr and senior Chris Gerhardt did not contribute to the scoring, their 39s
were a testament to the team's depth and talent. The win improves the team's
record to 5-0 on the year and 3-0 in the National Conference of SOL. With
matches agains William Tennent, Bensalem, and Council Rock South this week,
the Ghosts hope to make useful shots and to continue this consistency.
Cheers!
